SOURCE: P0442 check engine light code

The computer that read the code for you can also reset it.  If you don't have one, you can go to your local auto parts store and have them reset it for you.  This is what your code means P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak).  This is what Causes it and possible fixes: CausesA code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

  • A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
  • A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
  • A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
  • Other small leak in EVAP system
  • Faulty vent o-ring seal
Possible SolutionsWith a P0442, the most common repair is to:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

SOURCE: Check Engine Light

check all hoses on vehicle especially around canister and make sure u have a factory gas cap
The canister purge solenoid is part of the evaporative emissions system. When it is commanded "open" by the PCM (computer), it allows fuel vapors in the fuel system to enter the engine. This solenoid basically acts as a valve regulating fuel vapor flow to the air intake system. By burning these vapors in the combustion process, the evaporation system helps to lower overall vehicle emissions. The solenoid circuit refers to the wiring used to control the function of this solenoid, and usually runs between the solenoid and the vehicles PCM.
any defect in the above mentioned canister working will cause your problem to happen

SOURCE: error code p0442

EVAP Emission Control System - Small Leak Detected (1.0 mm). This code can be set when 1. fuel filler cap is not completely tight, 2. when various hoses get punctured or the canister close valve does not seal completely, 3. there is an actual leak in the charcoal canister, fuel tank, or other EVAP system component, 4. if any one of these components are malfunction (a), fuel tank pressure sensor, (b) purge control solenoid valve, (c) canister close valve, or (d) fuel cap. An engine vacuum leak would not set this code.
Solution: Take the vehicle to a Hyundai Dealership for proper diagnosis/repair.

SOURCE: check engine light code p0442 what is it what to

This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system
. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine. I hope this helps you

98 c1500 troubleshooting code p0442. where do i begin with this?

Code 442 should not have any effect on how the engine runs.
The code means the engine computer has detected a small leak in the venting system for the gas tank. The most common reason is a loose or faulty gas cap.

Car won't start after putting in gas

This is a CLASSIC symptom of an evaporative emissions issue. GM has had tons of issues with this system. Don't even think about fuel pump at this point. Read this post on how EVAP works.

Then read this post on service bulletins GM has issued on the EVAP system

My check engine light is on so I ran a scan with my personal car code reader & got code p0496. I called chevrolet & they told me its p0442. Which is correct?

p0496 is evap emission is high purge flow fault, p0442 is emission control system( small leak) the meaning is about the same. check for a bad gas cap first. sometimes this will set a check engine light. loosen cap and see if this is the problem. if it is. usually if you turn cap only a little the light will go out. but if bad enough just change cap.

Diagnostic code p0442

Hi, a P0442 is Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak). Start with the simplest thing first, make sure the gas cap is on tight. If it is, replace it with a new GM part (not a cheap aftermarket one). If that doesn't fix it, there are more steps listed here:
