Car wont start...clicking noise

Yesterday my battery died and I had it replaced on my 2001 montero sport. today I was driving and the tachometer (rev counter gauge?) started dipping to zero and I barely made it home. once the car was parked I turned it off and tried to start it again, and all I get is a click click click. would that be a started issue or something else?

the old battery was charged (still under warranty so couldn't be that old) it took awhile but once it got to 100% it immediately dropped to 33% so they said it was a bad cell and replaced it.

the alternater was replaced about a year ago as that is also still under warranty.

I just tried to start it again and now it doesn't even click, it does nothing.

I'm also wondering if there is a way to test the starter and alternator without removing them from the car first? would a diagnostic check be able to tell? I hate to have the hubs take off the alternator get it tested only to find its good and have to put it back on and then remove the starter and do the same thing...we would be divorced by monday! If they need to be moved, which one should I start with?

Well running the voltage from alternator should be at least 14 volts or a bit higher, engine off it should read at least 13 volts at battery. if alternater is less then 14 volts, it is the alternator at fault. or a loose alt, belt.

Well it could be a number of things starting with the reason why your battery was replaced? Was it old or maybe your alternator wasn't charging it fully?

I would check the battery again and have the alternator tested to make sure it is working and charging yyour battery correctly. Even though you installed a new battery, if your alternator is not fully charging it when driving, you will keep on having a low or dead battery.

The clicking sound coming from the starter is the sound it makes when isn't receiving enough voltage from the battery to engage the Bendix drive on the flywheel of your engine to start it.

Get a voltmeter and read what the alternator is putting out, if it is 13 to 14 volts you are good, anything less replace the alternator. There is also the possibility you have a defective battery.

2001 montero sport turns over but wont start.

IT SOUND LIKE THE BATTERY IS VERY WEAK. TRY USING ANOTHER BATTERY FROM A FRIEND CAR TO SEE IF IT START BEFORE BUYING A NEW BATTERY. SOMETIME IF YOU JUMP YOUR LOW VOLTAGE BATTERY (VERY WEAK) THE CAR WONT START OR TURN OVER.

Sounds like your alternator to me. The alternator is not charging the battery so when you drive it, the battery is being drained. It can die even while you're driving. I would get the alternator checked and get a new one if necessary

Alternater trouble Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2003

I have had the exact problem. I've changed altenator 3 times also and it has the same leak, but I've changed altenator an batterys over 2 year span. It just happend to me today after not driving it for 5 months. It's been in storage while I was away. Drive it fine for 2 days but today the radio kept shutting off and finally the car died right in the middle of the road. Bought a new battery because I had a warranty on last battery, but bought it just to get it home and in the driveway. Did you ever find out what was wrong with it?
