Where does the crank shaft sensor go on a 1997 5.2 1500 dodge ram

It is hard to get to - the sensor is at the back of the engine mounted through the transmission bell housing. The connector should be within 6 to 8 inches from the sensor. The sensor reads a sensor ring on the flywheel/flexplate.

have you checked the coil(s) or ignition module?

Tune up, coils and wires.

I had the same problem and replaced the Crank sensor with one from the auto parts store, it lasted a month, then failed. Then I got a sensor from DODGE (dealer) and no more problems. The perameters for those sensors that come from the autoparts store are such that they fit a veriety of vehicles. The one you get from your local dealer is more specific to your vehicle. When this sensor malfunctions, it can created multiple trouble codes, but it's a single fix. Also check that your wires are routed correctly.

The crankshaft position sensor is located on the right rear of the engine block, (where the transmission bolts to the engine).

it refers to crank or cam shaft position sensor having an intermittent loss. needs to be diagnosed and whichever sensor is bad, replace it before it leaves you stranded.

Maybe check ignition control modual.

fuel lines most likely sucking air at one of the connections.

Yes the crank sensor can cause this problem, they go open when hot.
