If the coolant is low enough, there will be air/space at the top of the engine. where the temperature sensor is located. also where the thermostat is located. air heats up much quicker than water. an abnormally fast rise in temperature might be due to the temperature sensor getting hot because not ehough coolant is flowing through the system. to check coolant level, wait until the engine is cold. remove the radiator cap by pushing down on the cap with the palm of your hand and turn counter clockwise. there will be a safety stop about half way around. this is to prevent the cap from blowing off in the event of pressure build up. again, push the cap down and turn to remove. if you see no coolant, there is a leak in the system. fill with the proper anti freeze. note the quantity. get the leak fixed.

the thermostat may be bad if there is no leak. have it replaced.

there could be a collapsed hose restricting flow

the temperature sensor may be bad, but you would probably get a check engine light

the water pump may be bad, but you should hear some noise if that were the cases.

my bet is a leak or the thremost

Heater blowing but its not getting hot

Has your engine thermostat been replaced recently? When they get old, the usually get stuck iin the open position. This causes the engine to take a considerable amount of time to get to operating temperature, causing you to be without heat inside the car.

My 1996 nissan maxima is overheating. Fans come on, new radiator, new thermostat. Heater now working, 1 hose on heater core not getting hot. Top radiator hose is bulging and water come out the radiato

try taking the thermostat out, see if it still gets hot, if its a vg30 engine, there could be trapped air in the system, there is a bleeder valve on one of the heater hoses, passenger side, right at the firewall

1989 Nissan Maxima Radiator fans and Temp gauge not working.i have a 1989 Nissan Maxima and the radiator fans do not come on. I have replaced the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and this did not work....

-The radiator fan will be kick on ONLY when the temperature reach about 190-200. Depend on the sensor that you have now.
You can test it by boil it and hook up a digital multi meter to it.
and make sure use a temperature gage to test with, so you know how hot the water when it kick on.

Good luck

Change the thermostat & it would be good to flush & fill the cooling system.

Ac blows hot air

Before doing anything I would have the freon level in your AC system checked, freon leaks are quite common and easily repairable by a specialist.
