High pitched howling and screeching (yes two different noises). The howling appears to happen when the air conditioning compressor pulley engages. The screeching, my guess would be from the belt. Any suggestions?

When the AC compressor kicks on, an electrical load is placed on the alternator and the drive belt that turns the alternator pulley, if not tight enough, can cause the belt to squeal. Replacing the belt should help with that noise if the belt is stretched from wear. The screeching noise can be from a bad idler pulley, a bad belt tensioner pulley or a bad alternator pulley or a failing clutch on a very old ac compressor and rarely a water pump pulley. To check pulleys remove the drive belt and turn them individually to see if they can be tilted up down or sideways with play in the "bearing" of the pulley. Also, you may wish to visually inspect the clutch on the ac and look for melted black rubber around the bolts that secure the clutch to the compressor (stinks, smokes and melts these rubber areas if ac compressor clutch fails).

First, with engine off, check condition of belts. Are they dry & cracked where they ride on pullleys? If so need new belt. Also carefully while engine on look at belt & see if wobbling or slipping. Most likely need belt tensioner &/or idler pulley.

2005 Murano started out making a high pitched whining sound when the AC was on. Now the sound is constant even when the AC is off. The faster i go the faster the progression of the whining. help .

The air conditioner compressor is driven by the engine. The compressor itself has a pully on it that is mounted to an electric clutch, When the Air condition is no on, the pulley still rotates on the shaft but the clutch is not engaged so the compressor does not turn. If the whole assembly is starting to wear then the bearings in the pulley will whine. Due to the the heat that builds up from this, the dealer or service tech will replace the whole compressor and the clutch, You are looking at a cost of near 2 thousand dollars.

Hi I have just recently purchased a 54 plate xtrail and when I put the aircon on it whistles to me more prominent in the cab than outside

or It could be a slipping compressor belt. Get the pulleys as well as the belt checked and tightened/replaced if required. When the compressor starts, the initial load makes the belt slip and screech, which goes away once the compressor speed matches that of the belt or the driving pulley.

Engage ac or defrost or vent I get a pitch squeal and nothing works.Compressor?

Yes, except for the vent setting. AC or defrost will engage the compressor, but vent should be just outside air.

2006 Chrysler sebring High Pitch Noise Screeching Sound

The belt is slipping or the compressor and/or clutch is bad.
If the compressor won't turn freely with the engine off, it may be locked up which will make the belt screech.

Hi, may I know crankshaft pulley having a bush intact?mine was 98' accord sv4, it was a noise appear when air cond. compressor engaged, i thought it was compressor noise, but aircond mechanic told me it...

you do not mention the type of noise rattle , squeal , rumble , grinding so any answer is a guess
the only noise from a crankshaft pulley would be a squeal/scream from a failed harmonic balance rubber insert
when the ac compressor is engaged the extra load on the pulley would make it slip on the rubber
however as the ac compressor would not be driving long before the crank pulley came apart I suspect that the mechanic was not experienced enough to advise correctly
suggest that you get a second opinion from an accredited professional ac specialist

91 S-10 it has a high pitch scream

It sounds like a worn or loose fan belt. It's slipping on the pulleys causing the screeching noise.

Screeching noise coming from driver side tire

The high pitch sound may come from the brake pads as metal parts hit the disc to signal the owner that it needs change. The metal parts gets exposed when the pads have worn out. The brake also has a hub to cover the disc. See if the metal plate is hitting it but this issue would appear when the wheels are in motion. Check if it is the belts, have the tension checked out. Other than that the bearings are the other items on your wheel that could cause a high pitched sound when you car is in motion.

Screeching noise, then a/c stops blowing cold air. Still blows air, just not cold air.

it could be the air conditioning clutch going out. to check turn your car on and idle it with ac on and hood open. at the ac compressor it will have a pulley on it with a clutch that engages when the air conditioning is on. if it engages and disengages it can be the clutch itself has gone bad, the ac clutch will also disengage if there is not enough freon in the ac system, will also engage and disengage if the pressure gets too high in the ac system. Depending on the year of the vehicle it will disengage at full throttle and come back on when you are not at full throttle.
If it is a metallic sounding screech for example take a coke can and drag it across pavement kind of sound it could be a bad compressor or a bad ac clutch. If it is a more rubbery sound for example a car spinning its tires kind of noise it could be a loose belt.

1. Check to make sure all belts are tight under hood
2. start car and look at ac compressor to make sure compressor pulley is turning and that the fan clutch is engaged spinning
