I have a 2003 ford taurus. I was driving up a hill and my rpms went from 4000 to 2000 to 3000 all within seconds while my foot was on peddle. No lights on the dash came on. I turned around, found road with no incline and was able to get it up to 95 mph with no issue. A day later i was coasting and the rpms dropped low enough that the car died. I turned car off and it started right back up. It has happened multiple times with both issues. and i have no lights turn on in the dash.
One of the things your car is famous for is bad fuel pumps ... if you frequently drive on a nearly empty tank then suspect that fuel pump .. they have a plastic impeller that depends on a continuous flow of fuel to keep cool .. if you are low on gas then it might capture some air as you go around corners or up a hill .. when that happens the impeller overheats and then you have problems until its replaced ..(not an easy job) ... you can have the fuel pump tested for voume and pressure .. if you never let the car get low on gas then that may not be the problem .. yoiu should also check or change the fuel filter ..
