When the windshield defrost is on there is a odd bitter-sweet odor and the right side of the interior windshield actually fogs instead of defogs. Any ideas?

The defrost circuit is shorting out.....unfortunately they don't make things the way they use to, what is happening is the defog circuit is actually bare wiring strips (not dangerous) that are exposed to heat the windscreen, hence removing the dew that is caused by the moisture that is produced
as they age, they wear out, now you will find if you look closely is that the strip that is there will not be a uniformed clean strip of metal but a chalky, possibly black section where it does not clear the window and this is where you can repair it.

at your local auto shop, there should be a defog repair kit, that has a metal paste in it thayou paste on with a little brush

its an easy quick fix repair you can do on the weekend

tell me how it goes

When my car turn on start switch...eng running. I don't turn on a/c switch but compressor pully and clutch are running together Is it ok or problems? Car is BMW e90. 323i 2010 year Thank you

Is the heater control in the defrost position? Most cars will automatically turn the air conditioning compressor on when defrost is selected to dehumidify the air being directed on the windshield. This keeps the windshield from fogging up, and helps defog the windshield more quickly if it is already fogged up.

I have a 1998 Cadillac that the windshield fogs on driver side. What could be the problem?

Likely the heater core steaming through the defrost vents. Does it have a sweet smell ?

Defrost will not defrost my windshield

You do not mention the type of car you have. If you have air that blows out the defroster and panel vents you should have defrost. Do you smell a sweet odor coming from the car? This could be antifreeze leaking though the heater core. This will cause your windshield to remain foggy.

Toyota Camry 2004 Defroster fogs windows.

2 possibilities:
1 - HVAC External Drain Tube stopped up with dirt, bee nest, etc. Hard to get to w/out a car lift. Need to clear and drain HVAC box.
2 - Leaking heater core inside HVAC box. Moisture from defog will smell sweet and be hard to clean off glass. Requires Dash removal and AC service to replace Heater Core. Very time consuming and Expensive A-Freeze fumes are also lethal if inhaled.

Try Solution #1 First, Least Expensive, Non-Lethal Condition.

My car smells like it is overheating but does not and the windows fog. when i put my windshield defroster on, it takes a long time to do anything and sometimes the fog gets worse.

it sounds like you have a heater core leak. If it smells sweet and the floor is wet on the passenger side, it is a leaky heater core. Costly repair.

Heater immediately fogs all windows and there is a sweet odor in the cab of 2003 Buick Rendezvous, defroster works fine, but will not clear the windows after heat is put on

Sounds like a possible heater core failure(hole in it) the smell indicates to me the coolant(anti-freeze) is leaking into the passenger compartment.
Check the carpet in front of the front passenger seat for moisture, this would confirm heater core leak.
Good luck !

When we turn on the heat, the windshield fogs terribly, and "for good" making it nearly impossible to clear it up again. ONLY the AC keeps the windshield from fogging - even in the Winter! can't tell you...

Thats normal, when the defrost button it pushed, the a/c compressor is on, and you can adjust the temp of the air. With the a/c is on, it takes the moisture out of the air. So, after the engine is warm, you can get warm dry air to defog the windows.

Heater works but defrost fills inside with fog.

your heater core has probably sprung a leak.does the fog smell kinda sweet?....check the floor in the front where the floor mats are for moisture or even puddles of antifreeze.(the replacement of a heater core can be very expensive as the entire dash usually needs to be removed to access the heater core)also look under the engine near the firewall for antifreeze drips.
