It has a timing belt, not a chain. Easy enough to check your owners manual. From memory, belt is to be replaced at about 100,000 miles or 160,000 km give or take.

For a 2001 nissan xterra when should the timing belt be replaced

On a 3.3L engine V-6, Nissan recommends replacement every 105,000 miles, note that this is an interference engine, that piston to valve damage will happen in the event of a timing belt failure.

Xterra with 2.4L and 4.0L have timing chain only, no timing belt.

How do I know when to change timing chain on 2006 xterra?

You change timing belts,not chains

All nissan trucks has chain issues until last fall 2009, when the factory installed an updated chain on most 2010's.

If it gets really noisy, then the new chain and tensioners will be needed. And NO, Nissan will NOT stand behind ANYTHING AT ALL. Your on your own.

ALSO - Buy an aftermarket new radiator IMMEDIATELY and install it as fast as you can.
Read the blogs, 2nd Gen Nissan truck 2005,2006,2007 and maybe 2008 have bad radiators from the rad mfg.
The Tran Oil Coolers leak and take out your trans

AGAIN- NISSAN DOES NOTHING FOR ANYONE. Read the internet info

CAR IS RUNNING ROUGH HAS 122K. MAKES LOUD NOISE

With that many miles, I think you need to replace the timing chain or belt. Also if you havent changed the plugs, plug wires, fuel filter and had the fuel injectors cleaned lately, this might help.

Nissan xterra 2003 car noisy problem

If it's the water pump there should be water leaking, if it's the steering pump the noise  would change as you turn the steering wheel left to right. If it's constant, it could be just old belt and bad idler and tension pully. Start buy praying a little water to the belt while the engine is running and if the noise goes away, the belt is in time to be chaged. If the noise is still there, then most likly it's the ilder bering or tension bearing. Good luck
