1996 Nissan 200SX Manual. I'm having trouble with the ignition lock assembly, that is it has become difficult to turn the key in the key tumbler. Only after some struggle will the key tumbler turn and start the car. I'm pretty sure the ignition lock assembly needs to be replaced (probably with a new set of keys) just thought I'd check here first. Thanks.
You have solved your own problem. I have replace many of these units. It is much simpler to carry and extra key than to screw arround with the old lock assembly. Keys and tumblers ware out like everything else. Let me know if I can help[

I can help you. however more info is needed, please tell me the vehice make, model, and year. Also the ignition switch your refering to is the electrical portion of a ignition lock assembly, if the vehicle has a standard lock that uses a key, (not push button start). if the lock is damaged or no keys...then the part you need is a ignition lock and key, not ignition switch, :) *some imports have this assembly, lock and switch as a unit*, and are not servicable, in this case the entire ignition assembly will be required.
check fuel pump, fuel pump fuse, distributor, and ignition coil please. then you will need to check crank position sensor.(to do this you need to find factory service manual)
Hi, can you tell if it's the lock in the steering column or something with the power steering instead? If it feels like the power steering, check the belt for looseness and tighten as needed. If it feels like it's in the column, your locking assembly may be coming loose inside. Below is a procedure for removing the steering wheel lock for inspection. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The steering lock/ignition switch/warning buzzer switch assembly is attached to the steering column by special bolts whose heads shear off upon installation. The bolts must be drilled out to remove the assembly or be removed with an appropriate tool. The bolts may also be removed with a hammer and chisel by notching the bolts and tapping them counterclockwise with the hammer and chisel. The ignition switch or warning switch can be replaced without removing the steering lock assembly. The ignition switch is on the back of the assembly and the warning switch is on the side.
CAUTION
The models covered by this guide may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chassis Electrical .
Disable the air bag system by disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting at least 10 minutes, prior to starting this procedure.
Remove the steering column covers.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the spiral cable assembly.
Remove the combination switch from the steering column.
Remove the steering column support nuts and lower the steering column.
Disconnect the ignition switch wiring.
Remove the bolts that secure the steering lock and remove the steering lock assembly.
To install:
Install the steering lock assembly and secure with new shear type bolts.
Connect the ignition switch wiring harness.
Raise the steering column and secure with mounting nuts. Tighten the mounting nuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm).
You have to remove the steering wheel with a puller, and the lock plate ,with a lock plate remover tool, and the cancel for the turn signals, and then the turn signal switch, then you remove a screw on the right side about 2 o clock position, and the lock and key will slide out.
When carrying a live inflator module, make sure that the bag and trim cover are pointed away from you. Never carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the underside of the module. In case of accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury.
When placing a live inflator module on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface.
Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the SIR system.
Remove the upper and lower shroud, air bag module and the steering column.
