Last time I had this problem I had a cracked head. With the cap off the radiator, run the engine at idle to operating temperature. When your looking in the radiator you should see the water circulating if the water pump is working. When you say the motor is over heating, if you have fluid coming out of the over flow hose then yes you are most likely overheating, if you are just seeing the gauge indicate you are over heating you may just have a bad engine temp sensor.

Changed bad water pump and timing but car is still overheating causes

Overheating is not always caused by a bad water pump or bad engine firing timing.

The most common causes are:
  • faulty radiator cap: steam/water will be escaping from the caps when engine is hot or oveflow tank overflows or empty!
  • crack cylinder head gasket: check when engine is cold thru radiator cap hole for milky oil in water radiator or large bubbles in radiator water after starting engine. Also check if water steam comes out of exhaust.
  • cylinder head itself: same symtoms as for gasket above.
Hope it helps you find your problems.

Heated coolant being lost at resevoir

How much are you loosing? If its just a little that could be from nothing more than expansion. If you are loosing a lot that could be either from overheating (steam) which would suggest the water isn't circulating and cooling or from a head gasket leak causing air to be injected into the water jacket and displacing the water.

Are you getting any oil in the water? foam? does the water appear to be milky?

96 Dodge Neon, not you average overheating issue

If the car runs good, and as long as you're keeping up with your regular oil changes, using the correct fluids (coolant, oil, fuel, etc), all coolant hoses are fresh, no leaks or excessive corrosion/contamination, and you followed all procedures correctly, then I suppose it could be the coolant temp sensor or related wiring/ connections. Normally this would trigger the cel (check engine light)...does it come on periodically when you turn the key on? Unfortunately, there are some dirty dealers out there who will tamper with this light (ex:remove the bulb) b4 selling. Have it scanned anyhow. If the check engine light works at startup/no codes, double check the thermostat. Did you flush the system b4 installing the water pump? Otherwise there may be some kind of blockage (or air) in the coolant passages. Don't get frustrated, and diagnose the ****** one step at a time. Good luck, hope this helps!
