check to see if the brake lights are working. some cars have a lockout for the gear shifter that won`t allow you to shift out of park if they are not working. it is wired into the brake light switch so when the switch or fuse is not working then the car won`t shift out of park.
the brake pedal has a sensor or switch it may be out.
Check the fuse!
APPLY BRAKES AND SEE IF BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON. IF NO BRAKE LIGHTS, REPLACE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH LOCATED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL ARM AND THIS SHOULD ALLOW YOU TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK. IF THAT BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS BROKE, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GET IT OUT OF PARK
The first thing to do is check the brake lights, if they don't work the shifter lock will not release the shifter from park. The common problem on this model is the connector at the brake light switch is defective due to broken wires inside the plastic outer insulator.
Had a similar problem. Solved it two ways first place key in the 3 position move gear to N then start and it will shift easily. Second solution check brake light fuse, it is probably blown replace it and gears will shift OK.
This might work for you guy's replace the brake light switch Easy step by step tutorial watch the video. im sure it will help. MERCURY MARQUIS STUCK IN PARK http://youtu.be/fgUn1TuHu-0
you should hear a click from the solenoid when you apply the brakes. If your brake lights don't work, your shift lock release won't either. There is a bypass method for emergencies in your owner manual. Check fuse for brake lights. And switch on brake pedal
Hello. Welcome to FixYa. Please allow me to help out on this.
If your car is stuck in Park (the shifter won't move), you either have a blow nbrake light fuse, a bad brake light switch, or the shift interlock solenoid under the shifter is bad.
The fuse is the most common, followed by a failed or unplugged brake light switch. It is rare for the shift interlock solenoid to fail, however.
these have a safety system so the shifter won`t go into any gear unless the brake is pushed(indicating someone sitting in the drivers seat),if the brake lights aren`t working this indicates that the fuse that operates the shift lock solenoid and brake lights is not working and needs replacing.check the fuses and replace the fuse and things will probably return to normal.
check the fuses as if the brake light fuse is blown it won`t allow the shifter to move out of park.it has a shift interlock system so the gear shift won`t accidentally be moved out of park by mistake.
If the engine starts, but wont shift out of park, you should check that your brake lights are working. The interlock solenoid is powered by the brake light switch, if the fuse is blown or if the brake light switch is bad, the car wont shift out of park...I hope this helps.
