2004 stx f150 right front wheel grinding noise,

Right front wheel grinding, grateing noise, when i stop it clunks and sounds like it disengauges then works again for a little while, sounds like it trying to engage that wheel or something slipping, 4whl drive works fine

  • Anonymous Jul 07, 2010

I drove a short distance in 4H & 4L no noise, only after driving in 2WHL for a little bit. some times it takes longer or shorter time for the noise to start again after I come to a complete stop an start driving again. I haven't been driving it because I didn't know if I'd cause more damage until I could fix it.

I agree with duane_wong on this one ( not like he was looking for my approval :) ), it sounds like a problem with the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) on that side.
Quick test, when you are in 4H ( or 4L ) does the noise still happen ?
I would say cracked vacuum line to the IWE, or a problem with the vacuum diaphragm in the IWE. You can test by having the motor running in park, and in 2H, and check the vacuum line at the IWE for vacuum. Make sure you test to the vacuum line, not the vent line ( ends in the engine compartment, not hooked to anything )

This is a block diagram of the IWE vacuum system

Could be the vacuum line to the IWE or the IWE solenoid.
There is a TSB on the 04-06 IWE solenoid, where it can ingest water and cause the vacuum not to hold, I would suspect both sides to have the problem if it was the Solenoid.
Start by testing the IWE vacuum line with a vacuum gauge, with the problem only being on one side, I would say vacuum line. You can unplug the vacuum line from both IWEs ( not the vent line ) and drive it with the front axle engaged as not to damage the IWE gears. IWE solenoid TSB :

The vacuum will be applied with the truck in 2H and the engine running ( vacuum holds the IWE gear out ).

When you hit your brakes does your steering wheel shimmy a little bit? If not it is most likely your bearings in your wheel have gone bad. If it shimmy's it also could be your ball joints.

Sounds like your 4 wheel drive may be trying to come in. Might be the switch on the transfercase. Try working the buttons from 2 wheel to 4 high next time it does the noise. See if the noise changes.

Grinding noise changes with speed stops when turned right. replaced left front wheel bearing. noise is still there. whats wrong ?

Does sound stop when you turn LEFT?

Turning RIGHT puts the heavy load on the LEFT front wheel.
That initially STOPPED the noise, correct? So why did you change L?

Turning LEFT puts the load on the RIGHT. Did you change the RIGHT?

Let's say this:
If turning RIGHT stops the noise, it's the RIGHT one that's likely bad.
If turning LEFT stops the noise, it's the LEFT one that's more likely bad.

Make sense? Turning RIGHT loads the LEFT wheel; and vice-versa as the WEIGHT SHIFTS AWAY FROM THE TURN.

More than likely it is what some folks call a CV joint problem, not wheel bearings. Try backing up and then going forward to see if "clunking sound" or a sharp "bang" is heard. Wheel bearings and CV joints only work if smooth. Sometimes a BEARING RACE is bad. Also, a bad spindle / part of the CV joint / transaxle assembly worn or badly machined. If in a WET ENVIRONMENT especially, u may want to try marine grade grease or teflon-added grease.

4/04 ford f150 4x4 front axle actuator won' t stay disengaged

Even though you checked the vacuum lines and found no leaks it does not mean there isn't a problem. The check valve in the line closest to the firewall actuator is probably your problem. Had the same issue replaced this line and solved it. The check valves in the vacuum lines are your best next guess.

Grinding sound in the front end

I had this problem in my 2005 F-150 twice! The first time was covered under the warranty and the second time was out of my pocket! ( close to $500.00!) There is a solodoid u[pp on the firewall that gets water into it then it corrodes the lines and such. Ford dealership replaced 2 valve assemblies, 2 actuator assemblies, and the IWE Solonoid to fix mine. They claim the problem will not come back but that remains to be seen.
