Start the engine and get it up to operating temperature. Take a spray bottle with water in it and spray the vaccum hoses and around the intake gaskets. If the water affects your idle, you possibly have a very common intake gasket leak. That motor is well know for vacuum leaks around the intake gaskets. You can also try spraying carb cleaner, but be very careful with that. Hope this helps. Sounds like a vacuum leak to me.

if its diesel there is a fuel shut off solonoid that goes bad u can use ur fingers to lift the arm and the engine will die. the solonoid is located on the drivers side toward the rear of the engine. the arm points strait down. pull it up to shut the fuel up (caution sometimes the arm will spring up snappng ur fingers keep fingers underneath the solonoid arm

SOURCE: how to remove the 5 speed transmission in a 1989
I can tell you its not easy. I replaced my flywheel. Best way to do it is buy the manual. And make sure you hae a transmission jack. I tried it with a floor jack. But can tell ya though ya got to drop the starter. Top bolt is hard to get to. Gotta disconnect the driveshaft. unbolt it from the motor. But it is recommended to drain the tranny fluid first though
