It doesn't matter how the trailer is wired. The connector on the trailer takes care of that. If you have the correct car side connector then just connect it in correctly and let the connectors take care of the rest. Almost any auto parts store carries the connector half you need and the packaging usually has installation instructions included.
The brakes and tail lamps will be wired together on the trailer harness
Do you mean I should connect the trailer light wire to both the directional and brake light wires in the van? That would effectively tie both the directional and tail lights together in the van which would have both lights come on at the same time whenever either the brake or directional signal were on.
The brake light can be connected to the left & right directional on the trailers circuit. The directional wires must be done separate as left & right to the trailers circuit

i didn't get an answer to my question. My trailer has a four wire harness with a flat connector. My question is how do I wire up the van whic has separate brake and directional lights/wires to connect correctly to the trailer. The van has no trailer wiring at present.
