Look at the label in the engine compartment (on radiator, fender, near fan shroud). This link will take you to a sketch of the belt routing diagram courtesy of Auto Zone for a 1500 2WD engine.

this has a serpintine 1 peice belt that has a single belt tensioner with a square drive in it you simply push tensioner against spring pressur and carfully hold and slip belt off 1 pulley then slowly let tensioner back to its stop, there should be a belt routong diagram on fan shroud or simply draw a picture of pulleys and belt routing before removal, then reverse procedure quite simple acully
I can't upload pictures but you can see one at auto zones site just lookup your car for belts and click on diagram when you find the right belt. Gates belts have the diagram on the sleeve for the engines the belt your buying fits. There is also a diagram on the top of the fan shroud, or on the belt cover above the water pump if it's the 3.1
there should be a diagram under the hood on the hood or on the front of the car. but the belt is pretty self explainitory on this car but whats probably throwing you off is how to get it around that meatal bushing sticking out off the engine. take the bolt out of the bushing and remove thge bushing.Don't worry the engine wont fall. now that you have that out of the way put the belt on and reinstall thge bushing hope this helps
There is a belt diagram on the emission sticker under the hood, if it is not there I suggest you get an Escort repair manual. I have searched the Web and am unable to come up with qa diagram of the belt.
