How a cooling fan should work

The cooling fan is thermostatically controlled and enerised once the radiator/engine temperature exceeds that of the thermostat controlling th the fan. If the fan is coming on prior to the engine reching the operational temperature, then either the thermostat is not functioning or ha been wired incorrectly into the system the radiator was changed.`

Envoy cant get to water pump to change it. Removed grill exc but can't get radiator out and fan out

The fan and fan shroud need to be removed as one assembly. You will need a 34mm wrench to get the fan clutch removed from the water pump. Once the fan clutch is unthreaded and the bolts that hold the fan shroud to the radiator are removed you will be able to remove the fan clutch/ shroud assembly from the vehicle. You do not need to remove the radiator nor can you remove the radiator without first removing the clutch/shroud. You will notice that when you are removing it it will be a little tight getting around the inlet for the upper hose on the radiator . Once the shroud is removed trim a notch where the shroud was hitting on the inlet and I will make install a lot easier. If you have any questions let me know. Thank you for using fixya.com!

I have a 1999 vw passat and i need to remove the radiator in order to change the fan. how do i remove the radiator?

Well, there is a catch 22 to your plan. In order to remove the radiator you have to remove the fan first. Check around the housing for the fan, you should find plastic pressure clips that hold the fan in place. Release the clips and you should be able to lift the fan housing and shroud out or drop it through to the bottom of the vehicle. To remove the radiator you have to remove the fan shroud and fan in order to locate and remove the retaining bolts for the radiator. There are usually 2 on the bottom of the Radiator sometimes accessible from the bottom of the vehicle and 2 near the top of the radiator, usually covered by the fan shroud.

How do you change a cooling fan motor? I can't get it off the fan shroud.

You must drain the coolant from the radiator by unscrewing the drain on the drivers side of the radiator, remove the radiator hold downs (10mm) and pull up the radiator carefully to remove the 4 10mm bolts that hold the fan to the radiator, the fan unplugs right at the motor.

The fan on my Toyota Corolla is not running. I just changed the radiator and refilled the coolant. Shouldn't it run immediately I switch on? How can I tell if the fuse has blown?

What has the radiator got to do with the fan coming on? There may be a bad fan switch, screwed into the radiator, but you wouldn't change the radiator, only the sw ,if bad. You could jump the fan sw wires, turn key on, to test for a bad sw and a working fan

Changing radiator - is it hard to do

Changing a radiator is a fairly easy task. It involves removing the fan shroud, fan, and the cover that holds the radiator in. drain the radiator, remove the hoses, and lift out. Installation is reverse of removal.
