Can you tell me what drives the oil pump on a '97 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1L V6? I just finished replacing the harmonic balancer on this vehicle. Upon completion the car started normally and revved up as usual. I left it running and went in the house for a minute and when I returned, the car had stalled. When I tried to restart, it cranked funny and sounded as if the timing was off. I disconnected the positive battery cable for several minutes to reset the computer thinking that there may have been an issue with the crank position sensor when replacing the harmonic balancer. When I restarted, I did manage to get the engine to start but it did not run correctly and the oil lamp stayed lit as if the oil pump was not working. Could I have broken something internally related to timing and the oil pump drive when torquing the harmonic balancer?
I don't think you can damage the oil pump gear when torquing the harmonic balancer.

Not likely, as the pump is run off of the camshaft with a shaft riding on it, unless you have an electric pump...check to see IF you have the crankshaft balance set at the right nodule/mark, when it is running check it with a timing light also...
