The fuel level sensor is located inside your fuel tank

You have to drive your car up on metal ramps. Chock your wheel's, have your pressure relived, remove your negative battery terminal, have your fuel pumped out using drill powered pump or drive your vehicle to the reserve point. Loose your tank straps, and lower the tank. Unplug your electrical connectors and pull your tank out under vehicle so you can remove locking flange on top of the tank to remove fuel pump and sending unit out.Replace fuel level sending unit and reinstall it back.

To replace the fuel pump calls for 2 hours of labor time.
So about 160 dollars (depending on labor time) plus cost of the part plus the shop supply fee.

They are the same. The level switch in the sending unit has shorted out. This will not affect the performance of the car. Like you said it only affects the gauge. The switch can't be purchased seperate from the sending unit. Just guessing yours is $400.00 to $500.00. I would live with out it untill the fuel pump went out. Just estimate the mileage with the amount (gallons) you put in.
Disconnect the fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly electrical connector, and the fuel feed hose
