I need to fit a new timing belt to this engine as the old one broke.Could you please send me a diagram showing where the belts fit in each pulley and what direction it goes on a Proton Satria GTI 2001.(1.8 litre)

Easy job on those vehicles. Usually need a wrench that fits over the belt tensioner, and you raise or lower it, taking tension off the belt. then just slip it off the nearest pulley-often the alternator pulley. Now you can let go of the tensioner and remove belt. Notice how it is fit. There should be a diagram on a sticker of how the belt fits on.

Do not take it off before you are ready with the new one.
Turn the crankshaft until the engine is at tdc. The key on the pulley should be at the top.
Use a little paint brush and a little paint,and mark a couple of teeth on the camshaft pulley and the belt in between these teeth. if there are any other pulleys using the belt, do the same for them.
Do the same for the crank pulley. Take off the belt, try not to move anything. Count the belt teeth between these two marks and transfere them to the new belt. Now fit the belt in the exact places that the old one came off. Do this very carefully and you should have no problems.

The alternator belt on the 1999 Dodge Caravan also controls the air conditioner compressor, the water pump and the power steering pump. The belt is called a serpentine belt, and it is designed to fit around all of the accessory pulleys at the same time. As the belt travels around each accessory pulley, it enables the accessory to operate. Once the belt is damaged, cracked or frayed, you should change it before it breaks. If that happens, each of the accessories will stop working.

Open the hood and prop it up so that it does not fall. Engage the parking brake.

Inspect the top surface of the fan shroud for the serpentine belt routing diagram. Follow the routing instructions on the diagram to install the new belt.

Locate the serpentine belt self-adjusting tensioner on the front of the engine. The tensioner is directly below the alternator. Use the bolt that connects the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm to rotate the tensioner.

Turn the tensioner device counterclockwise to move the tensioner. This will relieve the tension from the belt. Once the belt has enough slack in it, slide the belt out from under the tensioner pulley.

Lift the belt off each accessory pulley. Slide the belt around the fan blades and out of the engine area.

Lay the old belt next to the new belt to ensure that the new belt is the correct width and length. Slide the belt around the fan blades and around the crankshaft pulley on the bottom of the engine.

Follow the belt routing diagram to position the belt around the air conditioner compressor pulley, the power steering pump pulley, the water pump pulley and the idler pulley. Once the belt is routed inside each accessory pulley, inspect the belt to make sure that it is securely inside the pulleys.

Crank the 1999 Dodge Caravan for 10 to 15 seconds to completely seat the belt ribs in the grooves on each accessory pulley. Shut the engine off and close the hood.

If the belt routing diagram for the 1999 Dodge Caravan is missing, use a pen and a notepad to draw the exact routing of the old belt and use it when installing the new belt.

1. 1 Check to ensure the Sienna's engine is cold, then make sure the Sienna is in park, the ignition is in the off position and the key is removed from the ignition to prevent any possibility of the engine engaging during the serpentine belt replacement.
   
2. 2 Open the hood and locate the serpentine belt routing diagram sticker on the side of the engine casing. Study it for a moment before removing the existing belt. It is essential the new belt be installed exactly as the diagram indicates.
   
3. 3 Find the tensioner pulley, the main pulley that controls the serpentine belt, and fit a 1/2-inch socket wrench over the self-tensioner on the outside of the pulley.
   
4. 4 Pull the wrench to the left to move the pulley forward, which loosens the belt, then remove the belt.
   
5. 5 Compare the old serpentine belt with the new, replacement belt for length, width and number of grooves on the belt's underside. Be certain the replacement belt is the right part.
   
6. 6 Fit the new belt on to each pulley according to the serpentine belt routing diagram on the manufacturer's sticker, or according to the drawing made prior to removing the old belt. Fit the new belt on to the tensioner pulley last, again applying pressure on the pulley's self-tensioner with the half-inch socket wrench to loosen the pulley.
   
7. 7 Release the pressure on the self tensioner and allow the tensioner pulley to ease back into place, thereby tightening the new serpentine belt with the appropriate tension.
   
8. 8 Remove the wrench and close the hood.

If timing belt broke when the engine was running then a belt wont fix your problem as when the belt brakes the valves stop straight away and the crankshaft will still turn over at least 4to6 times adn in that time could AND would bend a couple of valves at least.if
not a lot more problems BUT if you still go ahead with fitting the belt then all the casings are marked to fit the belt and the keyway in crankshaft is always at 12 oclock to start with.. Ron

I can't send you a diagram,but it's not too hard to explain. Loosen off the alternator first. Two bolts, one you can see that goes through a bracket on the engine and another that is directly under that bolt on the bottom of the alternator that goes into the engine. Fit your new belt over the fan first, one blade at a time and on the pulley. Run the belt down to the bottom crankchaft pulley and then across to the alternator. Before you tighten the belt make sure that all 3 pulleys are in a straight line when you look from the side. If not move them so they are. Take a long screwdriver and put it in the hole on top of the alternator bracket and pry the alternator over so the belt is snug and a little bit more. Tighten the top bolt first,but be careful because it can strip the threads. Then tighten the bottom bolt.You will probably have to retighten it after a few days because the belt will stretch. If the belt squeals when you start or rev the engine then it needs to be a little tighter. If you strip the top bolt, just take it out and find a smaller one with a nut and washers and use it with the washers on the front to keep the new bolt from pulling through the bracket. You will need to Locate the Belt Tensioner. It has a Large Pulley on a Bracket that Has a Bolt in the Middle and a Smaller Pulley that Goes Under the Belt and Holds Tension on it. You will need to get a Wratchet, Socket, and Cheater Bar. Turn the Bolt On the Top Large Pulley with the Wratchet and Cheater Bar. This will Lower the Smaller Pulley So that you will be Able to Install the Belt. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

This engine has a timing belt.Once you have removed the engine front cover , turn the engine to the marks as shown in the diagram.Lock the crankshaft in this position with an old reverse light switch from the gearbox by inserting it into the hole under the bell housing (manual transmission).Before removing the belt , loosen 3 bolts on the injector pump after you locked this with a 8.5 mm drill bit.Replace the belt and pull the tensioner to 16 Nm.If you are fitting a whole pulley replacement kit take note of the upgraded spacers and their position.Dont forget to tighten the injector pump bolts again after you tensioned the belt and recheck your timing marks.

the belt fits over all those pulleys. It's either on the
hood itself or on the chassis near the hood pin release pin.
