Does the 3.0l transmission fit on the 4.0l engine

Hiya,

There are 5 automatic transmissions used in the Ford Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer. They may be identified by checking the transmission code on the Safety Standard Certification Label attached to the driver's side door post, in the space marked Trans. The transmissions can also be identified by a tag attached to the lower left hand extension attaching bolt. The transmission codes are as follows:
  • 1991–94 code T is for the A4LD transmission
  • 1995–99 code T is for the 4R44E (2.3L, 2.5L & 3.0L) or 4R55E (4.0L) transmission
  • 1996–99 code U is for the 4R70W (5.0L) transmission
  • 1997–99 code D is for the 5R55E (5-speed automatic) transmission
So, what you need to do now is...establish from a FORD workshop, whether both the A4LD and 4R55E transmissions share the same components and mounting dimensions.

Cheers,

Scott

How to change transmission fluid????

Transmission Fluid Replacement Replace transmission fluid as follows:
  1. Operate engine until reaching operating temperature.
  2. Turn OFF engine.
  3. Remove the drain plug.
  4. Drain the transmission fluid into a suitable container.
  5. Install drain plug.
    • Torque to: 22-29 lb-ft. (29-39 Nm)
  6. Refill fluid to specified level.
Fluid Type Specifications 4 Speed Automatic Transmission - Nissan Matic "D"
5 Speed Automatic Transmission - Nissan Matic "K"
NOTE: Using Automatic Transmission fluid other than Genuine Nissan ATF will cause deterioration in driveability and automatic transmission durability, and may damage the automatic transmission, which is not covered by the NISSAN new vehicle limited warranty

Transmission

It is most likely a plugged filter. I would try performing a transmission service on it and change the filter. What is happening is that the pump will only **** for a bit until a greater demand is on it. Once the pump is stopped ( shutting engine off) the fluid migrates back into the filter and fills it up. Engine is started and trans will work ok until all fluid is exhausted out of filter and it "gives out". Try this out first, it is a cheap start, and most likely is the problem.
