One fuel filter is in the fuel pump of the Express Chevy 3500, which is used to push fuel or gasoline through the fuel line. The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. This fuel filter is a mesh or screen that prevents large foreign particles for entering the fuel pump. Access to the fuel filter is obtained by removing the fuel tank and then the fuel pump from the fuel tank.
Second Fuel Filter Location
The second fuel filter is within the fuel line itself. After the fuel pumps extracts fuel from the gasoline tank and into the fuel line, fuel flows through the line and through another filter on the driver's side of the Express Chevy 3500 under the front wheel suspension. This fuel filter cleans the small particles that escaped from the fuel tank.
Fuel Filter Types
The year of your Chevy Express 3500 determines what type of fuel filter is installed on the van. The fuel tank filter is always mesh or screen, but the fuel line filter can be of three different types. Two types are snap-on filters, while one type has clip-on ends.
On 2005 gasoline engines the fuel filter is integral with the fuel pump/sender assembly in the fuel tank.
The fuel filter is normally located along the frame rail of the vehicle. On some vehicles however, it may have been relocated to the engine compartment. When in doubt, trace a fuel line from the engine backward or from the tank forward in order to locate the filter.
Some vehicles utilize a spin-on fuel filter located on the frame rail. This filter can be turned counterclockwise after the fuel pressure is relieved.
The pump is mounted inside the tank, you will either have to remove the tank or check to see if there is an access plate on the rear floor of the van above the fuel tank.
On those models the pump and sender unit are all in one. Check on Rockauto dot com for a price, their prices are generally very good.
Some fuel tanks have a drain **** that will allow you to drain all of
the gas neatly. If you have a drain ****, it will be located at the
lowest point on the tank. Loosen the valve and allow the gas to
completely drain.
If your tank has no drain ****, you'll have to drain it by removing one
of the fuel lines. The rubber hose that exits the tank at its lowest
point will drain the tank fully. It will either be connected to an
electric fuel pump, fuel filter,
or to a hard fuel line that goes to the front of the car. Loosen the
clamp on the end of the line that connects to the gas tank. Pull the
hose off and allow the gas to run out of the tank into your container
until it is drained completely.
Have you checked your fuel filter? If it needs replacement, it will restrict the flow of fuel thereby perhaps creating the symptoms you have described. This needs replacement regularly or it's remotely possible that you could damage your fuel pump which is located in the fuel tank. Fuel pump replacement is very expensive should it be needed (over $650.00 +) Note: As I understand it, the fuel pump is cooled by gas in your tank so it is important to keep at least 1/8 tank of gas in your tank at all times while running the vehicle to be certain you are not overheating the pump and shortening its service life. Anyone capable of crawling under the van can easily replace the fuel filter on most of the GMC Savanna/ Chevy Express models in about 5-10 minutes with just a ratchet/socket combo or wrench (to remove the bracket bolt that holds the filter in place) and a needle nose pliers (needed to squeeze the quick connect tabs that connect the lines to the filter). The correct filter will cost about $16 - $25 at a Walmart store. They are much more expensive at the dealer or parts supplier ($35- $55)!
