Your symptoms sound like a fuel pump, not the filter. The gas gauge is controlled by a sending unit that is mounted on the pump in the tank. If the gauge is sometimes not working, chances are, neither is the pump, which would cause the car not to start. The pump not only provides fuel, but also pressurizes the fuel system for the injectors and throttle body. The fuel filter would cause poor mileage and hesitation when accelerating. A completely blocked filter would cause the car not to run, but your gas gauge would still work since it's reading the level of fuel in the tank, not whether it's coming through the line to the engine.
Your vehicle doesn't have a carburetor. What you poured gas into was the throttle body. Does it stay running once it starts? You really should check the fuel pressure to be sure but not everyone has a gauge. Changing the fuel filter would definitely be a good start. If that doesn't do it, check the fuses for the fuel pump and check the fuel pump relay. If they check out make sure the power is actually getting to the fuel pump, check the ground wire of course also. If you have good power and ground at the pump and no fuel you will have to replace the pump most likely.
I think if you pull the cluster unbolt the curcuit board from it and look at sordering at the plugins there will be very small cracks in the ones an the ends look real close just take a sorder iron melt it back Nathan
what is the fix for this ? my neon does this all the time....gauges drop off and i hit the dash then back on they come....what's the fix ? please email me at [email protected]
I have the answer! There are two clips that the cluster connects to. Those two clips have become worn. There are two ways to resolve this. 1. replace the clips. 2. (what I did) took a sparkplug box and cut it in 4 strips long wise and folded them in half. I then inserted those strips between the dash and the clip. This pushes clip forward and creates a stable connection.
