REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: The manufacturer recommends that the entire powertrain be removed from the vehicle before removing the cylinder heads.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Powertrain assembly
    • Intake manifold
    • Cam covers
    • Harmonic balancer
    • Timing chain front cover
    • Oil pump
    WARNING
Align all timing marks before performing the next step.
    • Chain tensioner from the timing chain
    • Cam sprockets
NOTE: The timing chain remains in the chain case.
    • Timing chain guides, access for the retaining screws is through the plugs at the front of the cylinder head
    • Water crossover
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Cylinder head bolts by reversing the torque sequence
    • Cylinder head and discard the gasket
    WARNING
With the camshafts remaining in the cylinder head some valves will be open at all times. Do not rest the cylinder head on a flat service with the cylinder face down, or valve damage will result. NOTE: Clean all gasket mating surfaces. Clean the head bolt holes in the crankcase. WARNING
Be careful when cleaning aluminum gasket surfaces to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.
  5. Check the cylinder head for warpage; it must be less than 0.002 in. (0.05mm). If the cylinder head was resurfaced, the dimension between the combustion chamber gauge pad and the deck surface must be at least 10.5mm. To install: NOTE: Refer to Section 1 of this manual for the cylinder head torque sequence illustration. The illustration is located after the Torque Specification Chart.
  6. Install or connect the following:
    • New cylinder head gasket
    • Cylinder head, lubricate the bolts with engine oil
  7. Torque the M11 bolts, in sequence, as follows:
    1. Step 1: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2. Step 2: Turn an additional 60 degrees.
    3. Step 3: Turn an additional 60 degrees (total 180 degrees).
  8. Torque the M6 bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  9. Set the camshaft timing
  10. Camshaft guide bolt access hole plugs in the cylinder heads. The plugs should be seated and snug
  11. Install or connect the following:
    • Intake cam covers
    • Oil pump
    • Timing chain front cover
    • Harmonic balancer
    • Cam sprockets
    • Chain tensioner to the timing chain
    • Timing chain guides
    • Intake manifold
    • Water crossover
    • Exhaust manifold. Torque the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) or the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Powertrain assembly
    • Negative battery cable Fig. 1: Minimum head resurface dimension whats the proper order and torque specs for a 99 - 7922vg04.gif

  12. Fill the cooling system.

Cylinderhead torque settings

I'm not sure what engine you have in your 95 grand am SO I will give you both the 4cyl and 6cyl Specs. Also you didn't ask for the torque sequence. I will include that as well for both. 2.3 DOHC Quad 4cyl: Torque sequence---> front ' 7 3 1 5 9 ' of engine ' 8 6 2 4 10 ' Step 1: torque bolts 1 thru 6 (26 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Step 2: torque bolts 7 & 8 (15 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Step 3: torque bolts 9 & 10 (22 Ft/Lbs & 90 degree turn) Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION *** This engine uses "Torque To Yield" (TTY) head bolts that means they permanently stretch during the initial installation. New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed in order to obtain proper torque. 3.1 liter V6 Torque sequence--> ' 6 2 3 7 ' ' 5 1 4 8 ' Step 1: torque bolts in sequence to 33 Ft/Lbs Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION *** This particular engine uses "Torque To Yield" head bolts(TTY) (that means the bolts permanently stretch during the initial installation.) You MUST use NEW head bolts when replacing or reinstalling the cylinder head in order to obtain the proper torque.

What is the toqrque spechs and order for a Northstar 4.6 engin for both head and main & rod barngs. Does the main barnings have a order

If you have to pull a cylinder head on a 1993-1999 4.0L or 4.6L Northstar V8 to replace a gasket or do a valve job, do not reuse the old 11mm head bolts. Also, GM has revised the head bolt torque values and tightening procedure as follows:
  1. In sequence, torque all bolts to 30 ft.-lbs.
  2. In sequence, rotate all bolts an additional 70 degrees.
  3. In sequence, rotate all bolts an additional 60 degrees.
  4. In sequence, rotate all bolts another 60 degrees.
  5. Torque the front three M6 head bolts to 106 in.-lbs.

What are the torque specs for the main & rod bearing caps on a 2000 chevy s-10 2.2?

The head bolts are toque to yield on these engines, meaning that once they have been torqued to specification, they must be replaced when removed. If it is an OHV engine (solid push rods with and internal camshaft and rockers on the head studs) there is a sequence to tightening the head bolts. First, tighten all bolts in a circular motion, starting from the center and working outwards. I prefer to go in a clockwise rotation, but as long as it is in the correct order, rotation is not important. The long bolts must first be tightened to 22 lb/ft and the short ones to 23 lb/ft. Next, in the same order as before, tighten the long bolts to 43 lb/ft and the short bolts to 46 lb/ft. Finally, in the same order as the previous two steps, torque all the bolts an ADDITIONAL 100 degrees (10 degrees past 1/4 turn). A torque angle meter is required to do this properly and to specification. A routine of mine that is not necessary, but I have found helps prevent warping when torquing the head, is when torquing to final spec of 100 degrees, first tighten 60 degrees on all the bolts in the same order as the first two steps, then an additional 40 degrees all around in the same order.

7 3 2 6 10
