My 97 olds lss would not start yesturday. we had been driving it all day with no problems. got in it at the store and the car wouldnt start. (New battery) It would turn over but would not fire. it did sputter a little but then eventually nothing. We do smell gas when we try to start and we did try to start car. Is there something i can replace or try first to diagnose the problem? We did bang on the tank while trying to start it to see if it was the fuel pump but that didnt do anything.

If the security light is flashing when that happens, you need to turn the key to the ON position, and let it sit for 10 minutes, so it can reset the security code. Start it up as normal and let it idle for 5 minutes.

Check to make sure the Security light in dash on right hand corner is not on. If it is on , your passlock is enabled. to dissable it turn your key on but not start it and wait for apx 10-15 minutes. this should re-set it.

you can also try pulling the fuel pump relay under the hood and put it back in. works on my 2000 alero. and yes if the security light is on, you need to turn the key on and wait about 10 min. until it stops flashing, then turn off, then start car.
