When I start the car and put it in drive or reverse there is a sputtering that happens. It is almost like the pistons aren't firing right but feels more like a transmission problem. It feels like the sputtering only happens when idling or going at very slow speeds. Anyone have an idea what's wrong?

It seems like you have a vacuum leak in a hose some where. Check under the hood for any rubber hoses that are dry-rotted, cracks, or sharp bends in any of them.

SOURCE: Car will start right up but will not go into gear

There is a possibility that the plastic pieces that allow the shifter to move and slide have broken. You need to remove the console shroud and pieces to be able to see the shifter. There should be two pieces of plastic usually pink or yellow in color with a spring attatched (the spring depresses when the button on the shifter is pressed). Sometimes these plastic pieces break and blocks the shifter from moving.

Slow, slipping or no reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit. It is possible to remedy a fluid problem by removing the checkball from its cage in the case in the trans may help (must remove valvebody), or adding a high-viscosity additive such as Lucas Transmission additive or other seal restorer product. May also have worn boost valve (can replace in the pan).
