I have a 1997 3/4 ton GMC Sierra. When the key is inserted and turned , the engine turns over but has a hard time starting, sometimes making a series of noises , sort of a kerthump . I have just had a new distributor installed but I am wondering about sensors . What sensors should I have checked ? This truck is harder to start when the weather is damp or humid.i have a similar problem with my 1998 gmc 2500 5.7L. When I turn the key you can hear the fuel pump kick on and then it kicks off when pressure
regulator is satisfied. It will start and then immediately die on wet and damp days. A mechanic said it was a security code issue with the key.
I replaced my key and haven't had the problem for a few months but seems to happen when weather is damp or wet.
Check the hall sensor. Check the ignition wire going attached to the solenoid, make sure it is not bare or broken. A worn solenoid can also cause this. Check the starter relay as well.
It almost sounds to me like a timing issue. Did you get it timed properly after the distributer was installed? Another thing is the timing chain. Aim a timing light at the crank marks and see if they are staying in the same place, or jumping around. If they are jumping your timing chain may have jumped, or be badly worn, and will need to be replaced.

sound like the timming is off i would check it first then have the starter checked that might be your noise
