It sounds to me like the oil is being used slowly, by running through your "valve stem seals". The Valve stem seals are small pieces of rubber that surround the valve under the valve spring. They are designed to keep oil from running down the valve, and into the cylinder. When the valve stem seals wear out, they allow oil in small amounts to pass through the cylinder head, and run into the cylinder. If the vehicle sits for several hours, you will usually see a small amount of smoke on start-up, but rarely will ever see smoke while it's running.
