Have prodigy trailer brake control Have new to me 1996 Chevy Tahoe with factory trailer hitch. Need to install brake control - where on the chevy tahoe (under the dash by fuse box area I assume) do I wire in the controller? Thanks, Stephen

All trailers will need brake lights and turn signals as well as tail lights and side marker lights. Most areas require extra marker lights for overwide trailers. Also, most areas have recently required back-up lights for trailers, and most trailer manufacturers have been building trailers with back-up lights for several years.

Additionally, some Class I, most Class II and just about all Class III and IV trailers will have electric brakes. Add to this number an accessories wire, to operate trailer internal equipment or to charge the trailer's battery, and you can have as many as seven wires in the harness.

Determine the equipment on your trailer and buy the wiring kit necessary. The kit will contain all the wires needed, plus a plug adapter set which includes the female plug, mounted on the bumper or hitch, and the male plug, wired into, or plugged into the trailer harness.

When installing the kit, follow the manufacturer's instructions. The color coding of the wires is usually standard throughout the industry. One point to note: some domestic vehicles, and most imported vehicles, have separate turn signals. On most domestic vehicles, the brake lights and rear turn signals operate with the same bulb. For those vehicles without separate turn signals, you can purchase an isolation unit so that the brake lights won't blink whenever the turn signals are operated.

GM Full-Size Trucks 1988-1998 Repair Information / Brake Light Switch (REMOVAL & INSTALLATION):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disable the SIR system (if equipped).
3. Remove the clip (R/V Series) or unclip the switch (C/K Series) and unplug the electrical connector from the brake light switch.
4. Remove the switch.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal.

When installing the trailer break controller, 4 things must be considered carefully and objectively . 1.Safety regarding the mounting of the controller with respect to the drivers ability to control the vehicle without any hindrance whatsoever . 2.The dirvers ease of access (and control) of the coltroller while actually driving.....not sitting in the driveway....and lastly.... 3. The expected and assured 100% faith in the controllers ability (by the driver) to function without failure (no exceptions allowed) AND as designed to function (not ***-u-med), by properly mounting the unit and performing the correct electrical aspects of the installation without "shortcutting or jerry rigging" (no exceptions allowed)
4. The trailer brakes themselves. Ie. Shoes, drums, actuators, mechanical and electrical components etc. And last.....but too often forgotten....axle bearings maintenance / checkups / and tires condition and proper air pressure attained with a reliable tire guage....Did I mention checking the trailer lights functions ???
