Have prodigy trailer brake control Have new to me 1996 Chevy Tahoe with factory trailer hitch. Need to install brake control - where on the chevy tahoe (under the dash by fuse box area I assume) do I wire in the controller? Thanks, Stephen

this give solution using aftermarket harnesses which I have found but don't feel is necessary (esp at the prices). you tube video is for mounting 7-plug connnector on back of truck. Neither answers my question. I have factory connector on truck. I need to know where to wire the pordigy into the wiring " conveniece center" (Chevy's name) under the dash to left of steering column.

Your first answer and second answer did not provide me with the answer I need.
A more explicit question would be: Where can I tap into the trailer brake wire under the dash that goes back to the 7-pin connector at the rear of my 1996 Chevy Tahoe? All the other wires to connect my Prodigy trailer brake I have found except that one. This would be the blue wire on the Prodigy. Maybe suggest a good 12 volt power wire too, but the trailer brake wire is my critical issue.
    Thanks

The only question I have is: Is there, and if there is where does it come out under the dash, the wire that feeds back to the factory installed trailer hitch that engages the brakes on the trailer (the blue wire on the prodigy). Your Scribd wedbsite crashed my browser and it wants me to join facebook to get any info. Please either answer my question or refund my money. Thanks.

    Link does not open.

I went to a Chevy dealership after Labor Day who showed me where the wires were under the hood were and where they came out by the 7-prong connector. Most of the answers to my question were related to the Pordegy unit, not to the Chevy. The adapters mentioned don't work on a 96. The adapter harness listed to plug under the dash doesn't work on a 96 because there are no wires where in the control box where the instructions say to plug it in. I think for a 98 the harness would work. So a frustrating experience with FixYa.

All trailers will need brake lights and turn signals as well as tail lights and side marker lights. Most areas require extra marker lights for overwide trailers. Also, most areas have recently required back-up lights for trailers, and most trailer manufacturers have been building trailers with back-up lights for several years.

Additionally, some Class I, most Class II and just about all Class III and IV trailers will have electric brakes. Add to this number an accessories wire, to operate trailer internal equipment or to charge the trailer's battery, and you can have as many as seven wires in the harness.

Determine the equipment on your trailer and buy the wiring kit necessary. The kit will contain all the wires needed, plus a plug adapter set which includes the female plug, mounted on the bumper or hitch, and the male plug, wired into, or plugged into the trailer harness.

When installing the kit, follow the manufacturer's instructions. The color coding of the wires is usually standard throughout the industry. One point to note: some domestic vehicles, and most imported vehicles, have separate turn signals. On most domestic vehicles, the brake lights and rear turn signals operate with the same bulb. For those vehicles without separate turn signals, you can purchase an isolation unit so that the brake lights won't blink whenever the turn signals are operated.

Also, can check your 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe - Owners Manual (page 208 and next).

GM Full-Size Trucks 1988-1998 Repair Information / Brake Light Switch (REMOVAL & INSTALLATION):

2. Disable the SIR system (if equipped).
3. Remove the clip (R/V Series) or unclip the switch (C/K Series) and unplug the electrical connector from the brake light switch.
4. Remove the switch.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Hope helps.

When installing the trailer break controller, 4 things must be considered carefully and objectively . 1.Safety regarding the mounting of the controller with respect to the drivers ability to control the vehicle without any hindrance whatsoever . 2.The dirvers ease of access (and control) of the coltroller while actually driving.....not sitting in the driveway....and lastly.... 3. The expected and assured 100% faith in the controllers ability (by the driver) to function without failure (no exceptions allowed) AND as designed to function (not ***-u-med), by properly mounting the unit and performing the correct electrical aspects of the installation without "shortcutting or jerry rigging" (no exceptions allowed)
4. The trailer brakes themselves. Ie. Shoes, drums, actuators, mechanical and electrical components etc. And last.....but too often forgotten....axle bearings maintenance / checkups / and tires condition and proper air pressure attained with a reliable tire guage....Did I mention checking the trailer lights functions ??? Good Luck...Happy Safe Motoring..

How do I prepare my Chevy Tahoe to pulll a travel trailer

Tow package Reece hitch with the right size ball, electric brakes with trailer wiring. Sway bar\'s stops trailer from swaying back & forth. The most important is to find out the tongue weight on trailer. If it\'s more than your Tahoe can handle you will need to put air bag\'s on your rear suspension to help support the weight. You will also need to check the tire load rating on your Tahoe\'s rear tires. You don\'t want a blow out going down the road! Goose neck trailer won\'t work period! Good luck!

Were do you hook up the two wires under the hood for trailer brakes on a 2000 silverado

Sometime around 2000, GM started putting trailering pre-wire harnesses in the vehicle. Your truck may have this harness built in and would greatly simplify brake controller installation. Look under the glovebox and see if there is a wire harness tied off. There will be four wires in this harness, which should be run over to the steering column to use it. Most trailer brake controllers are compatible with this harness.
The four wires in the harness are: Red, 12vdc; black, ground; blue or purple, brake pedal; and brown or white, trailer brake wire to seven pin, four pin, or five pin connector at trailer hitch, if your truck came from the factory with a trailer hitch.
If you are adding the hitch and do not have the four wire harness, the under hood wires from your brake controller are Red, connect to one of the studs under the distribution box cover (the distribution box is on the driver's side against the firewall. Underneath the cover are two large threaded studs which are hot from the battery all the time); and the other wire from your brake controller would have to be run the length of the truck along the frame, tied off in several places, to the trailer hitch connector on the bumper. Follow the directions that came with trailer hitch wiring connector to connect this wire to the proper pin in the connector.
If this has helped you, great, and please remember to vote/comment.
Good luck!

My 2001 chevy tahoe, on the 7 pin trailer plug, doesn't have power to the brake pin

If it's a factory outlet then you need to add a 30 amp fuse to the fuse panel under the hood, there is currently a red "blank" one in that location.

The factory doesn't put one in for some reason.
