My 04 VW Jetta blew thick white smoke from tailpipe after freeway drive. No indicator lights came on, all oil leaked out (after smoke started)... is this engine or could it be just the turbos? Right before smoke started, noticed unusual sound (slight) and I could not excelerate using turbo (it had speed but not the burst that turbo gives)

A new turbo charger is about $340, but you can buy the bearings and seals and rebuilt if yourself for about $100
http://turbosandparts.com/
It is not hard, and it does not take long to do.

I normally do not bother with synthetic, but with a turbo charger, it might be worth it. What really seems to ruin turbo chargers the most is not letting them cool off before parking.
Once you turn off the engine, there is no longer any cooling, so the build up heat will burn up the oil and seals.
Run the engine for at least 5 minutes below turbo levels, before shutting down the engine.

Thanks, Kirkx... my first hearing about the need to let engine run before shutting it down. I guess hindsight is 20/20. Unfortunately, I am a complete neophyte when it comes to auto work, so can't do it myself, but may have a handle on a trusted mechanic that will. Thanks for the tips - very helpful

SOUND LIKE FAILED TURBO OIL SEAL AND BEARING CAUSING OIL LEAK INSIDE TURBO INTO EXHAUST SYSTEM BURNING CAUSING A LOT OF SMOKING.NEED NEW TURBO.NEED TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL WHEN NEEDED AND CHECK OIL INLET PRESSURE TO MAKE SURE TURBO GETTING GOOD OIL PRESSURE.REASON I SAY CHANGE OIL WHEN TIME FOR OIL CHANGE OLD DIRTY OIL WILL DESTROY EAT AWAY ON TURBO BEARING.

its about a $1200 job, getting a turbo from VW from what i remember was the easy part the problem from the dealer was they didnt carry the exhaust studs and you needed to try and keep the ones from the original turbo, which is not easy considering how hot those get making it almost impossible to get them out in good shape.

IF YOU COULD DO IT YOUR SELF.CHEAPER TO BUY REBUILT KIT.WITH BEARINGS AND SEAL.LONG AS THE TURBO BLADES AND SHAFT LOOK OKAY.TO REMOVE OLD BOLTS AND NUTS.YOU NEED TO USE A GOOD PENETRATING OIL.LET IT SOAK IN.THAT HELPS.

Volvo quit running

If the smoke was white, then you've probably blew the head gasket. Check for coolant in the oil as well as the coolant level. Coolant in the oil and low coolant in the radiator or reserve bottle combined are good indication of blown head gasket.

  • White smoke out out the tail pipe means you might have just blown your head gasket. White smoke is water (antifreeze) burning with the oil.

Smoking thick white smoke from tailpipe

  • A little is to be expected when first starting an engine.
  • White smoke coming out the tailpipe more than just a little at start up means is that your engine is burning antifreeze. Usually a head gasket leak, cracked head or cracked block.
  • I know this is not good news but please don't "shoot" the messenger. I answered this question so you would not be stuck somewhere with a seized engine. Which is what is going to happen in the near future.

I have a 1990 chevy pickup 5.7l v8 that made a loud noise when i was driving. Next the truck starting losing power and makes an engine tapping noise. I parked the truck.for several months and now tyin to...

Well, billowing white smoke from the tailpipe is generally antifreeze burning off in the engine, which would indicate either a blown head gasket into a cylinder or a broken fluid passage. In the old days there was a way an automatic transmission could leak trans fluid into the engine and create white smoke too, but that shouldn't apply to your vehicle. Not certain about the noises, but clearly you have some internal damage. You can check the antifreeze level to see if you have lost fluid. You can pull the spark plugs to see if you notice damage to the plugs or deposits on the plugs indicating antifreeze.

Sounds like your turbo-charger. Wouldn't be surprised if your turbo impeller is broken in two. Advise checking intake for blockage while you're at it.

It is sometimes hard to start my jetta tdi. When this happens and I finally get it started, qite a bit of thick smoke comes out of the exhaust. Any thoughts?

It is hard starting my VW 2003 Jetta. It usually take 5 to 10 cranking before it turns over. Then it run normally. It only happens when the car has not been driven for about 6 hours.
