First gear on the transmission does not shift until I let off the peddle and the tac. drops down.
I had the same problem with my 96 Ram 1500. I thought I was going to have to pull it out and get it rebuilt or just replace it. That was at 134,000Km it's now got 210,000 and shifting like a dream. What I did to solve the problem was this, as follows:
1. No lucas transmission Fix makes things worse.
2. Get your self a new transmission filter and gasket
3. Grab Gunk transmission medic 12oz
4. Grab 7 Liters of Valvoline ATF+4 transmission fluid (Made for chrysler transmissions)
5. Drop the trans pan and drain all the oil, clean pan and magnet
6. start truck for 5 seconds and the pump will pour out another 1 liter
7. re-install filter, gasket and pan, then add your Valvoline ATF+4
8. Add, the valvoline, transmission medic and make sure you have the right level of fluid
That solved my transmission problems, instantly it was shifting better, I no longer had to let off the gas to make it shift. Now if you have large pieces of metal on the magnet, and it's totally covered in filings, you might want to consider rebuilding the trans. My magnet had usual clutch.

I have a 1996 Dodge ram 1500 Magnum, 5.9L. When going down the road, it always shifts hard, and sometimes you have to let go of the gas and it will switch gears... An will also sometimes stick gears an then later when I stop an go again, it's fine. When I accelerate fast it has a hard time shifting into the higher gears, it will just stay in a gear, an run high rpm.... Does anyone have any clue on what i can do for an easy fix???
I just had the same trouble with my 96 dodge ram truck 5.9 engine what I did was change the transmission fluid and filter then put in transmission repair right after the first 2 quarts I then started to drive pulling off slow every time If it didn't shift I would do it manually first shift it to 2nd when the rpm's get to 2,000 and your speed gets to around 45-50 mph manually shift it to drive push the rpm's up to 2,500 then shift it to Neutral just for a split second just enough to disengage the gear then shift it back to drive. you may have to do this several times and for several days to unclog the transmission and to un stick the shifting mechanisms the key is the restoring fluid. It took my transmission about 160 miles of city driving for the Restoring fluid to start working. don't push the transmission to hard 2500-3000 rpm only. I hope this helps
I had the same problem with a 1989 ram what you need to do is to change the TPS . The TPS switch is what causes the transmission to shift into the next gear. You have a electric shift trans, not a linkage shift .

My 96 1500 wouldnt shift out of first at all, after i ran a diagnostic on it all signs piont to the govoner pressure soliniod and a bad transponder its about 400 for parts. turns out its a common problem.

Have a 96 dodge ex cab long wheel base automatic shifts fine in 1st 2nd but in drive it wont **** out of second to any other gear and wont go into reverse either..dont know what to try first.. any help..

I have a 95 dodge 1500 just replaced the transmission and now its starting out in high gear then shifting into low gear instead of going from low to high any guesses.
That is one of the best vehicles ever made, those are high geared and alot of times dont shift if your foot is in it, gradually step on the gas, until the shift happens and also, check the tranny fluid, while vehicle is running in park and never over add, and dodge uses oonly synthetic tranny fluid hope this helps.
Transmission does not shift into 3rd or 4th
You will need to replace the Transmission speed sensor. The cost is only $20 - I bet it will work!
brand new tranny n sensors and still wont shift into 3rd or overdrive n shift hard when it shift into 1st n 2nd

shifter needs to be inspected. If The
shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

i just completed the exact thing to my 96 dodge ram truck and it fixed it...
wont shift outta 1st at all. will do it sometimes when i let off the throttle, but wont go into third. Truck was fine until i stopped and filled it up, then i noticed if when i got back in.
