Bought a 1997 mercury sable today, guy said it needed a starter, charged dead battery and replaced starter. It fired right up, was driving it home it died, oil light, battery light, and check engine light came on. Checked oil and it is full. So checked the battery it was sitting at 12.25 volts, so I went and bought a new battery, hooked it up and it started right up but oil light, check engine light and battery light came back on and before I could shut it off it died. Went out to Check battery volts were at 12.36, wouldn't even crank over and when I checked the battery terminals the positive cable was so hot it burned my hand, checked negative cable and it was hot too. So I unhooked the battery and had it towed. Any ideals or help you can give would be very helpful.

Try checking the altenator. If the starter and battery were gimpy, the altenator may have a blown regulator too!. It sounds like there is a short in the system causing this problem. Most likely the altenator or component in the charging loop. WF

you could be draining the alternator and battery with the new stereo..depending on how you hooked it up you might try charging the battery back up.you were supposed to take off the pos cable not the negative

that's becasue the new abattery went dead because it was not charging. The battery light must be OFF to charge the battery. Take it back to whoever fixed it. May be a bad wire betwen battery & alternator too.

check the 175 amp mega fuse in the engine compartment.

cehck this ground for a good connection - G104
Left front fender near air cleaner

check the 20 amp fuse for the charging system. Fuse 26 in teh engine compartment fuse box.

Try disconnecting your park lights after you have a charged battery to see if that is the reason your battery is going dead. If it's still charged then most likely, there's your problem. I would try this before tackling the switch.

Check the battery +12v power connection to the starter is in good order,
Check the ground connection between the battery negative and the engine/starter motor is robust and intact.
If no problem with above, replace the starter motor.

Car won't restart after being driven
this kind of cars have coming problems with the ignition switch going bad, try to remove the covers arround the steering column and check the ignition switch located on the buttom side of steering column for possible loose body, if loose replace it, but also make sure if you have any aftermarket alarm and if does have it remove for some one since it may afect the starter circuit, also check your batterie conectors for good contact and tie and clean very well

1999Mercury Sable died...acts like battery dead or alternator, however with key off there is a click, click sound and as soon as you giggle ignition and make sound stop ...there is power but as soon as you turn key on it all goes dead again.. battery takes a charge and don't think its an alternator problem.. think it is a relay switch...possibly the windshield wipers.. have noticed that the wipers turned on for no reason a couple of times and once again when I was messing with this situation
