How much does a transmission sensor cost to replace for a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT?

I wouldn't worry about the cost. Any dealer or auto parts store would be the place to get that answer.
You need to know if you have a bad sensor. A code for a sensor does not mean it's bad, or needs to be replaced.

If it has RWAL only, the sensor is in the rear end. If it is ABS brakes, there are speed sensors on the front wheels as well. If there is in fact a speed sensor in the tranny, it is most likely internal.

polarcycle is right but there is a speed sensor on the drivers side top of the trans. toward the tail shaft or transfer case. there is as well a sensor inside the trans. itself that is mounted on the web. behind the overdrive band and drum.
