Just changed the 2.5L engine in my 89 jeep wrangler and the engine turns over but won't start it just backfires like the timing is off, but thats not adjustable on this engine. Where did i go wrong?

my similar problem was battery sliding into computer wiring harness disrupting sensor input / output signals. placed 1" spacer on rear battery clamp to push battery forward away from computer wiring. solved my problem. Also replaced front exhaust manifold O2 sensor, that was responsible for bucking after cool down of engine after 20-30 min., which cured that problem as well

My similar problem was wires off the ASD (automatic shut down relay). Also, discovered battery can slide into computer wiring harness, disrupting sensor input / output signals. I placed 1" spacer on rear battery clamp to push battery forward and this problem (backfiring/lurching/bucking) under certain driving conditions (rough roads / turns) stopped. (may be related to install).

Have you checked the firing order to make sure the plug wires are in correct order. Sometimes an engine will run but rough if 2 wires are mixed but it could be that there's more than 2 mixed up.

93 jeep wrangler,,turned it off and now want start,,got fire to plugs? help

If the check engine light does NOT come on when cranking, at the times when it won't start, and the relays are clicking and buzzing, then your ECU is in need of repair. The engine will only start after the check engine light comes on and the ecu is what controls that. ECU is likely going bad, causing the delayed start problem typical of early 90's jeeps. Reasonably priced repair or replacement services for your jeep ECU are available on ebay.

1989 jeep wrangler starts jumping and backfiring

Start with the basics...meaning check the spark plug wires and spark plugs. While under the hood, inspect all hoses for a vacuum leak(s). Then turn the ignition key on-off-on-off- on...leave in the on position and write down the number of flashes the check engine light indicates....2 flashes = #2....pause.....3 flashes = #3.
Let start from here. Are you able to perform engine repairs or diagnostics???

89 jeep wrangler wont start

Sounds like the drainback valve inside the pump is shot...try just turning the key on and waiting a minute and see if it starts that way.
