Two problems with '97 Pontiac Bonneville 1: automatic transmission does not shift into higher gear at correct time as it once did, resulting in engine running in higher rpms before gear shift occurs. 2: car has ceased running twice while driving at at speeds below 5 mph. Check gauge alert activates because car thinks it has no gas when it actually does.

Check fluid level and see if it smells burned. If you do not work on it yourself, have a good reliable trans shop check it out. Usually the repair shop you use can recommend which trans shops do good work.

SOURCE: 1992 Chevy Suburban rpms jump at 60+ mph

When the transmission jumps the extra RPM by 200 or 300 RPM. That's your Torque Converter Clutch lock up disengaging or it's slipping. Pull the transmission dip stick out and check the fluid level and condition of the fluid, look to see that it's not burning. If the fluid is not burning then it's the Torque converter clutch unlocking and the Throttle position Sensor may need to be readjusted, or if the transmission is still running off a TV cable. The TV cable may need to be adjusted and or the transmission filter may be dirty and needs to be changed. Take it to a transmission shop and explain to them what the transmission is doing. I'm not sure if your transmission is an 4L80 or a 4L80E. If it's the 4L80E the PCM and ECM control the lock up to your converter. If the PCM detects a problem with the transmission, it drops the transmission fluid pressure to the converter clutch. If it's a 4L80, it's controlled by the TV cable and vacuum lines to the transmission modulator. Regardless they can look in to this when they change the transmission fluid and filter. Recap: Have the Suburban's ECM scanned for any transmission DTC codes. Service the transmission if the fluid is dark in colour and burnt. Adjust any linkage to the transmission that is an issue to it's performance. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

Jerking shifting gears

may need a transmission or overhaul that one so take it easy on it. changing the fluid and filter may help but sounds like the valve body is dirty and the trany cant shift like a new one.

Transmission Question

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.

Retrieve transmission faulty code first and check the transmission oil level.
Every time you turn off the ignition key the PCM act like that
The PCM will see the problems every time it happens and only in the same ignition key cycle.

When do I use the d 5 gear in acura 2003 tl 3.2 liter

Pretty much all the time!

D3, D4, and D5 are all just *DRIVE* like on any automatic transmission, EXCEPT
that the number next to the D is the "highest gear the automatic transmission will go into".
The Acura just gives you a choice, in case you don't want to go into a higher gear (like if it's slippery traction or a steep hill, etc.)

1 means: Manual gear. FIRST GEAR ONLY.
2 means: Manual gear. SECOND GEAR ONLY.
D3 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 3rd gear.
D4 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 4th gear.
D5 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 5th gear.

2002 pontiac bonneville transmission jerks or bumps when shifting, however not all the time. Can go one or two days without doing it or once it starts if you stop and turn off the engine and start the car...

Had the same exact type of problem. Sometimes the transmission would **** or jump when the car shifted gears and sometimes it would not. Drained the transmission fluid and replaced the filter. Did not fix the problem.

Here is what fixed my problem. I replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor. It cost about $150.00. From what I was able to find out the mass air flow sensor is tied into the PCM module that tells the car when to shift.

Hope this if helpful.

You may have low vacuum pressure which can screw up the fuel regulator as well as shift points. I would start by checking for vacuum at idle, and if low, check for a disconnected, broken or kinked hose.

You could change the fluid and add a good conditioner like lucas, but even if it works better, you are only buying time. Unit is likely beginning to wear out.
