I have a 1991 Chevy 3500 crew cab. The drivers door latch will not close. I have removed the inside door panel and see the linkage but I do not know what I am looking at. Is there a diagram available? What part attatches to the door latch from the handle and how do I replace or reattatch it?

So when you say 'it will not close' do you mean it won't stay latched or does it 'bang' as you attempt to close it and won't go into the opening all the way?

The reason i ask as it could simply be the 'claw' is stuck in the 'closed' position IF the door bangs and doesn't want to go all the way into the cab opening. IF that's the case then you can use a screwdriver and while holding the exterior button like you're trying to open the door and use the screwdriver to 'flip the claw' of the latch to the open position.

IF it closes into the opening but simply doesn't want to latch it MAY just need some lubrication. Spray it good with your favorite lube (WD40, etc) then work the 'claw' while activating the outside (or inside) button. If it still doesn't want to latch then chances are the spring inside of the latch mechanism is broken and the latch assembly will need to be replaced.

I know you have a '91, which SHOULD possibly be the same as the old '73-'87 regular pickup. IF it's the 'new' body style (1988-1998) then the videos aren't going to be of help at all.

These videos MAY help explain how things work and how the linkages clip onto the actual latch assembly;

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: Door Panel removal

remove all visable screws from panel and arm rest. Arm rest should come off. Use a flat thin tool or piece of metal and slip it between the panel and the metal door frame. Slip it in about 2 inches,. Slide it back or forth til you hit a stop. That should be a plastic pop in.twist metal tool to pull panel away from the door. It should pop away from door frame. Don't overdo it if it doesn't come out. try another spot. once you get one loose, you can tell how to get the others out. Once panel is loose push it upwards to get top lip out of window bottom. If it has power windows, disconnect plug. If it has manual windows, you will have to remove the window crank There is a snap ring behind window crank that has to be removed.push in on panel by window crank and you can see the ring.

SOURCE: Broken inside door handle-1996 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab

On almost all GM's there will be a screw in the recess that the handle sits in. After removing this screw, gently wiggle this cup out of it's hole and there should be a metal rod attached to the back of it with a small clip. Unclip this and it's out - installation is the reverse. Just don't lose the clip or let the linkage rod fall down inside or you will have to remove the door panel. It shouldn't take five minutes to replace and most parts stores now carry GM door handle assemblies. Good Luck!

SOURCE: latch problem

My wife did the same thing to my truck. I am a bodyman so I know your problem. The Latch mech that is held by the 3 screws you mentioned needs to be replaced. The release leaver that engages your door strycker is not returning to the correct position when you press the door button. the inside door leaver activates the mech from a different position and has more throw so it often releases. Unfortunately the latch is very expensive at least I think so!
it is a bit complicated to exchange so get someone who has done it a few times... not much room in there to connect the leavers. Phil

2005 envoy drivers door wont open from inside or outside

Linda, The door latch linkage is probably damaged or fallen off inside the door. Pop into a good body shop and have them check the door lock/latch mechanism for you. The body shop rates tend to be more reasonable then dealership for this type of repair. Links below are just to give you an idea of what may be involved in repair.

How do i take off the inside drivers door panel on a 2005 dodge caravan

Hi Roberta, here's the instructions on how to remove your door panel. I have to wonder though on why you are removing it, my guess is you window doesn't roll up or down and your replacing the regulator. Any way here goes.

REMOVAL

  1. Remove the plug and remove screw attaching door pull cup to inner door panel.
  2. Remove switch bezel and disconnect power window/memory switch.
  3. Remove screws attaching trim panel to door from below map pocket.
  4. If equipped, remove window crank. (Refer to 23 - BODY/DOOR - FRONT/WINDOW CRANK - REMOVAL)
  5. Remove screw holding door trim to door panel from behind inside latch release handle .
  6. Disengage clips attaching door trim to door frame around perimeter of panel.
  7. Lift trim panel upward to disengage flange from inner belt molding at top of door.
  8. Tilt top of trim panel away from door to gain access to latch linkage.
  9. Disengage clip attaching linkage rod to inside latch release handle (INSIDE DOOR HANDLE LINKAGE).
  10. Separate linkage rod from latch handle.
  11. Disconnect the power door switch, courtesy lamp electrical connectors.
  12. Remove front door trim panel from vehicle.
Hope this helps and have an awesome day Roberta!

F-250 extended cab rear door will not open.

A malfunctioning door can mean that there are problems with the linkages. For starters, remove the door panels to look for possible issues. Remember, the cables go bad often, and the plastic pieces that hold the cables are known to break so be very careful when removing the panel - remove all the screws, slightly pull upwards, and the panel comes right off.
Now thoroughly inspect the cables and latches, see if everything is working in sync, thoroughly lubricate the inside, and if that does not help, change the parts to see if that works.

1996 lincoln continental door latch does not lock/unlock door from inside or outide...door stays open basically...door latch has no response, unlock/lock switch works

I have the same problem.(Door will not stay closed) The door latch itself seems worn to the point where the linkage from both the actuator or door handle causes the latch to get stuck. I can free it with a screw driver applied where linkage connects to the latch, but it will stick again. Dealer wants over 300 with actuator. I am looking in junk yard for part. Remove door panel, somehow disconnect linkage from latch. It makes more sense to remove 3 hex or star screws 1st (27mm) so latch will be more accessible. My problem is the door latch, not anything else. Good luck

I HAVE A 2000 FORD F250 AND BOTH BACK DOORS WILL NOT OPEN, IT SOUNDS LIKE THE LOWER LATCH IS WORKING BUT NOT THE TOP ONE. HOW DO I GET THEM OPEN SO I CAN LOOK INSIDE THE PANEL TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?

So i am going to assume you have a supercab with suicide rear doors by thwe way you say the upper latch! There is a cover over the upper latch. Remove it. You should be able to get a screw driver or something up in the to depress the latchlock. Sounds like the cable inside may be broke to the top latch release. otherwise keep disassembling until you are able to get the door open. You might even need to remove the upper latch from the frame if possible.

Broken driver side door inside handle, how do I take off the door panel on a 2000 Chevy 3500 old body style?

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls.
