According to what you have mentioned it seems that the weight is far heavier than normal. But as a test I would suggest you test vehicle without towing anything behind. See if there is any difference in temp. Hope this helps.

I have given the pajero a very hard run on its own plus steep hill climbs. no indicators warning lights came on ran perfectly without the van attached. The van weight is also well within the maximum weight for towing?
Your best solution, if you intend to keep towing the van and want to prolong the life of your transmission, is to have an auxiliary transmission cooler installed. These very effective devices are common in tow vehicles, and your mechanic should be able to obtain and install one for you for less than $300 -- far less than the cost of repairing or replacing a transmission.

Heeman thank you for such quick response the van I am towing is 18 and a half ft long I am at present going from the gold coast to sydney just stopped for the night at nambucca heads.wandering if I am towing too heavy a van? but does not make sense to me when I am seeing larger vans with smaller vehickles!!
