Check Engine Light Code P1174

Hi,

The check engine light just came on my 1998 Z3. I took it to AutoZone and the code on the machine is P1174. I would like to have some clue as to what the problem is before I take it to the shop. Can anyone help?

Two possibities. Oxygen sensor or vacuum leak.
Check all the intake rubberhoses first.
Spray some breakcleaner to those, if the motor revs, you found the broblem.
If not, its possible bank one oxygen sensor.

"Fuel trim; bank 1 - range/performance problem."

Possible causes are:- MAF sensor; EVAP can purge valve; coolant sensor; injectors/fuel system; ECU; secondary air, intake, wiring or connexions fault. [The oxygen sensors you've already done.]

On smaller engined BMW's, the more common P0170/1 fuel trim code is often flagged by a faulty breather valve. Any air leak into the inlet or the exhaust will disturb the precise control of the fuelling and eventually [it's both an additive and multiplicative process] you'll log enough events to flag the code.

  • Ekse Jun 16, 2008

sorry there is a mistake in my last comment "[The oxygen sensors you've already done.]" It may also be the oxygen sensors.

Where did you get code? whomever ran diagnostic should have told. Anyone can buy a $19.00 scanner, and still not code meaning, All Vehicles in North America use OBD2 codes and you can look online by typing P1174 code. the results are free. It took about 5 seconds to find answer..

Check engine light on 1998 Z3 BMW

BMW engine light

Comes on if DME engine management system self diagnostic fault detected. Will stay on until codes are called up and memory erased.

With OBD read the code as follows. Turn on ignition key, press accelerator pedal to the floor five times within 5 seconds. The check engine light will remain on for 5 sec , blik off, come on for 2,5 sec, go off for 2,5 sec and fault code will begin to flash. If more than one fault exist 2nd fault code will be separated by 2,5 sec pause. after fault codes there will be a 0.5 sec flash and light will remain off. to read codes again do procedure again.

Canceling of codes. make sure fault code is present (short blink and light goes out for long period), depress throttle pedal for at least 10 sec. read fault codes again and check for code 1444 (no faults stored.)

Check also the following, fuel pump, oxygen sensor, fuel injectors, engine coolant temp sensor, idle speed control valve, mass airflow sensor and too many other things.

Check Engine light on 1998 BMW Z3 roadster

yes the light is because of the gas cap being gone (sets code in evaporative emissions system), replace the gas cap, disconnect the battery for five minutes and that will turn of/reset the light, make sure u have the radio code before u do this, if u don't u will have no radio after the battery is disconnected..

Engine light on

That code is for cylnder bank 2 running lean, there is actually an open technical service bulletin for this issue on your car, for clogged fuel injectors. That could be the problem, as well as a vac. leak, a malfunctioning bank 2 sensor 1 oxygen sensor.
