1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.....My check engine light came on, I took it to Auto Zone and they said it was code P1494. What is that and how hard is it to fix?

Answer
Hi ,
The code refers to the leak detection pump that is part of the gasoline vapor control system which is for pollution minimization. It says either that the pump switch or mechanical operation is faulty. According to a Chrysler manual I have, you would find the pump, probably on the underside of the vehicle by tracing the hoses related to the vapor recovery tank that may be in the right front corner of the engine compartment (I don't know Jeep designs) and then check to see if the pump starts when you turn the ignition to the run position when the vehicle is cold. Then remove the vacuum hose side of the pump and see if it draws a vacuum. If it does, then the vacuum-detecting switch that detects that the pump operation is OK may be faulty. If the pump doesn't start or doesn't draw a vacuum then the power to the pump, the pump itself, or the vacuum line may be leaky. Finally, the powertrain controller could be at fault.
In any case, that is where the issue is, and it should not be a major issue if it is handled by a knowledgeable mechanic. But you could check it over yourself if you are so inclined. p.s. your best bet is to take it to a jeep dealer to get it fixed hope this helps please dont forget to rate my solution

My check engine light is on - Took it to auto zone, and they said it is error P1494. What is this and how do you fix it. Is it major?

P1494 is the code for the leak detection pump and or system, which is part of the early evaporative emission system. (Fuel tank fumes)

It's there to allow the computer to run an integrity test of the fuel tank, lines and carbon canister's ability to contain all of the fumes coming from the tank and all line associated with the system.

The code could be set for a number of reasons such as a faulty gas cap, cracked vacuum lines, solenoids & vent valves stuck to the pump itself.
It can be a very difficult fault to cure being it doesn't take a very big leak anywhere in the system to set the code and that's if it's a leak and not an electrical or mechanical fault.

Check Engine Light

Actually, just go to your local auto parts store and check the codes for free. If you go to a dealer, look forward to shelling out a minimum of $75 dollars. Most of the time its a oxygen sensor or something like that.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

I had a problem with my Jeep doing the same thing. It turned out to be the Crank shaft senor. It would just turn off even on the highway at 60mph.
If you can change it yourself you will save a lot of money.
