I have a 2005 malibu. Clunked for a year and finally lost all steering! Rack and pinion was replaced. solved. The clunk yu here are missing teeth.
Some racks begin to have play between the teeth, common misconceptions are inner or outer ball joints. however this problem does occur in chevy malibu MAXX with ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING.
the intermediate shaft also causes noise in the process both can be checked.
I had experienced the same problem about over 1 year on my Malibu Maxx 2005 (50,000 miles). I found this link from the web:

If you can not find this link, you may try search for this pharse "From inside the vehicle, spray GM Superlube" from Google or others
Here is what I did:
- Bought a bottle Multi-Purpose Lubricant, Superlube (GM Part No. U.S. 12346241, in Canada 10953474). It costed me $12 from a nearby Chevy dealer.
- Opened driver door, sprayed this juice as instruction.
Results: All noises were gone immediately!
Hope this info help!
My 05 had the same problem however it was still covered by the dealer. It was the lower or intermediate drive shaft. It was free for me but it would have been $600.
I had and have a year later the same issue. It was my Intermediate Drive Shaft. Hope this helps.
There was a recall on my 2005 and they replaced something in the steering wheel- no cost and took 20 minutes to do.

i did steering shaft is the problem...
Is there really a recall because my 2005 Malibu Maxx has the clunking noise too?
My 2005 Malibu Maxx makes that clunking sound and so does my brother's 2005. Yes, it might SOUND like bad ball joints, but it is not.
This noise occurs during low speed turns, and based on what I have read, is coming from the rack and pinion. Some have tried re-packing the half shafts, and others have tried replacing the power steering gearbox. In addition some owners have completely replaced the rack and pinion. I too would appreciate any additional input and suggestions, as I have not tackled the problem yet.
2005 malibu... clunk or a "pop"when turning left on the drivers side... you feel it in the steering wheel... And you can feel it on the tire outside of the car when someone else just turns the steering wheel... A new strut assembly and it did nothing. And I have read on the internet that this is a common problem for these malibu's. And if you replace the steering parts the poping or clunk felt in the car and the steering wheel will be back in aroung 10,000 miles... Does anyone have a REAL fix to this problem.
THANX
