In this tutorial, we learn how to check the brake pads on a 2008 Dodge Caravan, check the thickness of the brake pads on the car to see if they are thick enough. To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front wheel
     
   • Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads
     and the 4 anti-squeal shims

To Install:

CAUTION
Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the
vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons
on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or
replacement of the brake caliper.

1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
   
2. Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
   
3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
   
4. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads
     NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced
     together with the pads.
     
     
   • 2 brake pads
     
   • Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
     
   • Clip
     
   • Front wheel
   
   
5. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
   
6. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Rear
To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Rear wheel
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
   • 2 cylinder slide pins from rear caliper assembly
     
   • Caliper assembly from rear caliper mounting
     
   • 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shims from rear caliper mounting
     
   • 2 anti-squeal shims from each disc brake pads
     
   • Pad wear indicator plate from the inner side disc brake pad
     
   • 4 pad support plates from the rear caliper mounting

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • 4 pad support plates on the rear caliper mounting
     
   • Pad wear indicator plate on the inside brake pad
     Note: Install the pad wear indicator facing downward.
     
     
   • Anti-squeal shims on each brake pad
     
   • 2 disc brake pads with anti-squeal shims to the caliper assembly
   
   
2. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the sliding part of 2 caliper slide
   pins.
   
3. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Disc brake caliper assembly with 2 caliper slide pins
     
   • Torque to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm)
     
   • Rear wheel
   
   
4. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
   
5. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Front
To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front wheel
     
   • Front brake caliper assembly
   
   
3. Make matchmarks on the disc and the axle hub.
   
4. Remove the front disc.

To Install:

1. Align matchmarks and disc onto axle hub.
   
2. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts
     
     
     
     1. Torque to 90 ft-lbs (123 Nm)
     
     
   • Front wheel

Removal & Installation Front To Remove:

1. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid from the reservoir until the level is lower then half way between the MAX and MIN levels.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Install 2 wheel nuts to secure the rotor on the hub.
4. Remove the bottom brake caliper pin bolt.
5. Pivot the brake caliper body upward and secure out of the way. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
6. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp. Figure of brake assembly with caliper raised showing brake pads in mounting bracket
   
   
7. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads from the brake caliper bracket.

To Install:

1. Install the brake pad retainers and both brake pads into the caliper bracket.
2. Pivot the brake caliper down over the brake pads and into the brake caliper bracket. Insert the lower brake caliper pin bolt and torque bolt to 70 ft-lb. (95 Nm).
3. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
6. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.

Rear To Remove:
Rear disc pads R&I

1. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid from the reservoir until the level is lower then half way between the MAX and MIN levels.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Install 2 wheel nuts to secure the rotor on the hub.
4. Remove the upper caliper mounting bolt.
5. Pivot the caliper down to access the pads.
6. Remove the inboard and outboard pads from the caliper bracket.
7. Remove the brake pad clips from the caliper bracket.
8. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp and the old inner pad.

To Install:

1. Install new brake clips in the caliper bracket.
2. Install the inboard and outboard pads in the caliper bracket.
3. Pivot the caliper up over the pads.
4. Reinstall the upper mounting bolt and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
5. Remove the 2 wheel nuts securing the rotor.
6. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
7. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
8. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.

remove the caliper, by removing the two holding bolts, then use a old brake pad against the pistons and a c clamp and push piston all the way in, next is to clean and lube pad mounting surface and the caliper slide pin, then install new pads on bracket then caliper and tighten caliper bolts, heres a diagram to help you,

That's to be expected and is completely normal.

Rear brake shoes as fitted to drum brakes can typically last up to 60k miles with periodic adjustments, but you have rear disc brakes and the shoes will typically last half of that.

Also, modern brake pads no longer contain asbestos and are now made using harder metallic compounds; the direct result is that brake discs (US=rotors) are also considered to be consumable items as they are worn down by the harder pads. It's not unusual to have to replace front discs every other pad change and rear ones with every pad change; in both cases the mileage will typically be around 30k miles on most models.

For front brake pads replacement you need only usually wrench set, inclusive 7 mm allen key also. But for rear brake pads replacement you need obligatory a special caliper piston pressing tool, in order to press back rear caliper piston with parking brake automatic adjustment!!! For front brake pads. First you must verify yours front brake disc diameter: 280 mm or 288 mm. (On my car y have 288 mm). After that you can buy the brake pads (with wear sensor). For change front brake pads you must raise vehicle, remove wheels, extract the retaining spring of the caliper, and remove the caliper as follow: 1. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, and do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose! 2. Remove top and bottom caps (on back side of the caliper) for access to guide pins, then unbolt and remove them from the brake carrier. Remove the caliper. 3. Now you must thoroughly clean the brake calipers (free of grease). 4. Remove outer brake pad from brake carrier. 5. Pull inner brake pad out of brake caliper piston. 6. Check up the brake fluid level on the reservor, and emptying if neccessary! 7. Push piston back into brake caliper housing. 8. Install inner brake pad (with expanding spring) in brake caliper piston. (Arrow marked on pad - if exist, must point in direction of brake disc rotation when vehicle is moving forward). 9. Install outer brake pad into brake carrier. 10. Bolt brake caliper housing to brake carrier using two guide pins. Tightening torque is 25 Nm. 11. Install both caps. 12. Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing. Important: Depress the brake pedal firmly several times while the car is stationary so that the brake pads adjust to their normal operating positions!!! Raise the rear of the vehicle and make sure it is securely supported. Remove the rear wheel Remove the brake hose (A) from the suspension arm by removing the brake hose clip (B).Thoroughly clean the outside of the caliper to prevent dust and dirt from entering inside.Support the caliper with a piece of wire so that it does not hang from the brake se.
Remove the two guide rods (C) and caliper (D) from the bracket. Remove the pad shim (A) and brake pads (B).

Remove the pad retainers.
Clean the caliper thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks. Check the brake disc for damage and cracks. Install the pad retainers. Check the foreign material at the pad shim (A) and the back of the pads (B). Contaminated brake discs or pads reduce stopping ability. Keep grease off the discs and pads.
Install the brake pads (B) and pad shim (A) on the caliper bracket. Install the inner pad with its wear indicator (C) facing down ward. If you are reusing the pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to prevent a momentary loss of braking efficiency. Rotate the caliper piston (A) clockwise into the cylinder, the align the cutout (B) in the piston with the tab (C) on the inner pad by turning the piston back. Lubricate the boot with rubber grease to avoid twisting the piston boot. If the piston boot is twisted, back it out so it is positioned properly.
Install the brake caliper (D). Install and torque the guide rods (E) to proper specification. Install the brake hose (F) onto the suspension arm with the brake hose clip (G). After installation, check for leaks at hose and line joints and connections, and retighten if necessary. Depress the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes work, then test-drive. Engagement of the brake may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after the brake pads have been replaced as a set. Several applications of the brake pedal will restore the normal pedal stroke.

Sure sounds like you need new brake pads. On the brake pad is a small metal tab that contacts the rotor and squeals when the pads need to be changed. Hope this helps. Please keep me posted. Good luck

1. Remove the rear disc brake caliper (2K327).
2. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
3. Lift the rear disc brake caliper off the rear disc brake caliper anchor plate (2B582).

1. CAUTION: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pads.
   Remove the brake pads by pushing inward and rotating the pad up.

1. NOTE: Use a block of wood or used pad to protect the piston and boots.
   Retract the caliper piston (2196) into the rear disc brake caliper.

the rear calipers will have to be turned in(screwed in). do not try to push then straight in or you will have to replace the caliper
