I have a 1989 ford ranger with a V-6 that did not come with a heater core. I have a hose coming from the water pump and a hose coming from the thermostat housing. Does it matter which hose connects to the heater core or is it specific.

Maybe the heater core is plugged or you haven't bled it properly?
If the heater hose returning from the core to the water pump is NOT hot, while the hose going to the heater core from the thermostat area IS hot, then the heater core is plugged probably.
You need to remove the heater hose while cool,from the thermostat area and remove the hose from the water pump area (that's the outlet of the flow thru heater core) AND THEN take a garden hose with p-is-tol grip type sprayer,and blow water back thru the outlet hose out the inlet hose. This will blow any bad plugging material out the way it got in.
Don't apply too much pressure if it is plugged bad. The heater core isn't made to stand 50lbs. water pressure. don-ohio (:^)
if your just doing the heater core you can clamp off the heater hoses to the core, disconnect them from the heater core and run water through it both ways. if its real bad connect spare hoses to the heater core spigots and pour CLR into the core until it is full(coming out other hose) block off hose so the core is filled and let sit. then flush out again until water runs clear. if this won`t clear it then it will have to be replaced.
the thermostat is the easyest place to start with but im betting on a pluged heater core your gonna have to back flush the heater core take off the hoses to the heater and some how connect a garden hose then slowly turn the water on watch and observe anything coming out.
does not matter which goes where on the heater core one from water pump straight to heater core and the other comes from the intake manifold, they both travel below the passenger side valve cover.
Is the issue that the blower fan is not functioning? If it is functioning, then your issue is not electrical, and more likely that your heater core needs replaced. After the truck is warmed up, are the two hoses that enter the firewall on the passenger side under the hood warm to the touch, or is 1 warm on the other cold?
Not an expert by any means, but i know my ranger.. I had a small leak at the top of my radiator that still cooled the engine but didnt have enough pressure to get to the heater. The heater hoses travel up over the engine and just were not gettin anything to my heater core. That or make sure the heater control valve is operating.
follow the two rubber hoses from the firewall to where they connect to the motor. disconnect them and flush through both of them. whichever one you start with first dont point the empty hose at you becuz the water will be coming out of it.
follow the large hose from the top of the radiator to where it claps to the engine. unclamp it, remove the nipple it was clamped to and there will be the thermostat
