Too, Code P0174 is hardly ever attributable to faulty 02 sensors. For one thing, the odds of both upstream sensors going out at the same time are pretty slim. Secondly, that code, while related to the fuel management system, do not tell you that there is anything wrong with the 02 sensor units or circuits; they only indicate that the sensors are encountering and/or reporting a lean condition in both banks for which the PCM can no longer compensate (i.e., long-term fuel trim limits have been exceeded).

It is wise, therefore, to approach the problem from the perspective of a lean condition first, before condemning the 02 sensors or their circuits. Lean condition = too much air or not enough fuel, or a combination of both. Hence, you want to look out for the usual lean suspects, some of which have already been noted: upper or lower intake gasket leaks, leaks at the vacuum and air hoses/connections that run to and from the upper intake, PVC system leak, EGR system leak (or system malfunction), dirty MAF sensor, and also fuel-delivery issues such as clogged filter/injectors, weak fuel pump, faulty regulator, etc. A fuel pressure check would be a nice thing to do if possible.

    Regards, Lee Davidian

TRY CLEANING FUEL INJECTORS.DIRTY CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS WILL RESTRICT FUEL FLOW GIVE YOU A LEAN FUEL MIXTURE.TRY A BOTTLE OF SEAFOAM POUR IN A FULL TANK OF GAS SEE IF IT HELP.

I really doubt the fuel injectors are the problem here. do a vacuum hose leak test, poss EGR problem as well

  • Jonah Oneal Oct 27, 2010

HOOK VACUUM GAUGE TO INTAKE MANIFOLD YOU NEED AT LEAST 17 - 20 HGS VACUUM.IF VACUUM LOW AROUND 12 - 14 HGS YOU HAVE INTAKE MANIFOLD LEAK OR POWER BRAKE LEAKING WILL CAUSE VACUUM LEAK.

  • Jonah Oneal Oct 27, 2010

WELL EGR VALVE FAULT WOULD CAUSE ROUGH IDLING AND STALLING.COULD BE BROKEN VACUUM LINE TO FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. OR FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR FUEL SOAKED CAUSED BY RUPTURE DIAPHRAGM.

  • Jonah Oneal Oct 27, 2010

CHECK FUEL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 26 - 45 PSI. NOW IF FUEL PUMP SOME TIMES THEY WILL GET OLD AND WEAK.CAUSE LOW FUEL PRESSURE THAT WILL CAUSE FUEL LEAN CODE TO SHOW UP.

This code is usually caused by leaking intake manifold gasket on the front side. With the engine running, spray carb cleaner or ether on the gaskets. If the engine revs at all, you have a leaky gasket. If not, check for other vacuum leaks in anything attached to that side of the manifold. If you have more questions, please let me know.

This is likely the problem, the O2 sensoras were just reading the lean condition, so yes a trained ford tech would have NOT replace the rather expensive O2 sensors, that is throwing parts at the problem, one lean code may indicate a bad sensor.

oxygen sensors can't be cleaned. They're porous. If they're silled with soot, you have to replace them. Plus, O2 sensors don't caused lean codes, they only report them. Stop looking at the oxygen sensors and look for a vacuum leak, low fuel pressure or clogged fuel injectors.

What does code p1131 mean on a 2001 ford taurus

bank 1 sensor 1 lean code. Check vacuum lines first. Could be egr leak also. Most vacuum lines run on the back side of the engine on these. Most common fail is the PCV 90 degree elbow. On the passenger side.

Last week I had the very same catalyst, evap and ECG codes come up on my 1999 Mercury Mystique which is like a Ford Taurus. A friend was able to find a hole or leak in the hose connected, replaced it and it runs fine. I havent run it a full and straight 50 miles yet to clear the check engine light but that repair alone changed the entire way the car was poorly driving. Im sure that hasnt fixed all the probs but thats a good starting point.

See a visual diagram of heat oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2 for ford taurus 2001

bank 1 exhaust is the rear manifold towards the windshield side. Follow the exhaust down. There should be one oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter and a monitor after the catalytic converter. Be Careful.. they look the same.

Whenever I get a vehicle in that "sputters" the first things we check is the fuel filter and pressure on the fuel pump. With the 1995 and newer cars the computer will kick out error codes if the oxygen sensors are defective.

What doe's code P0171 mean

The error code P0171 means oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). This causes because as follows:---
  • The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty.
  • There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.
  • ---------
  • In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick.
  • Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
  • Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure.
  • ---------
  • The MAF is located in the air intake duct work, to the left of the air filter. Look for 2 wires leading to the sensor unit from the outside to pinpoint it's exact location in the housing/duct.
This will help.Thanks.Helpmech

Very,very heavy on gas

Change the air filter, the fuel filter, and your oxygen sensors (the oxygen sensors are the main sensor used to compute the air/fuel mixture going into your engine). Also, check and adjust your tire pressures. On your car you should run about 36psi in each tire. Low pressure will kill your gas mileage.
