They are not only for improving milleage, but play a crusual key for ECM to give out how much fuel to mix with air to have proper combustion hence not stalling when accelerated. But Oxygen sensors are expensive and even you have them replaced , this is not going to solve your problem since gum has built up at your throttle valve over the years. Have another shop to clean your throttle body first. Make an appointment so you can be there to see how dirty the throttle body is and also to make sure they actually take out the part to clean, not just spraying cleaner to the Air mass flow flap valve. After the throttle body cleaned, take off the battery cables for 30 minutes to reset the ECM to its default state so it doesn't use data from your current state. You will see an improvement. Afterward, the problem is still existing then Have Auto Zone store diagnose free for O2 problem before replacing them. Cheers.

Look for a small electric motor near the accelerator cable and near the top of the valve cover.
It's call IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) motor.
It's job is to increase the idle when load is added.
Example: turning on headlight, turning on AC.
Testing it is simple.
Warm up you car for 10 minutes.
Locate the IAC motor
turn on loads.....AC,headlights,etc
The motor should move the idle up
If the motor does not increase the RPM then it can be stick.
Try to give it few gentle taps to free up the gears.
It can be clean if your are up to it.
This electrical motor is very expensive. Please handle it with care.

I will do a simple tune up and gas treatment before starting to replace any parts.

i do not have one handy but the starter will be located at the point where the motor and the transmission join. on either side of the motor. follow the main line from the battery to make it easier to find. if you are replacing it post another question and i'll do my best to answer it if i see it come up.
robert
please take a moment to rate this solution.. thanks

Is the Service Engine Soon (or Check Engine) light illuminated on the instrument panel? If so, then have someone pull the codes and post them back here. Autozone will do this for you at no cost.Caution: don't purchase any parts after reading the codes on their recommendation! If no codes, then suspect either a bad crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor. There are other possibilities too, but these are primary. I have seen MANY bad crank sensors do exactly what your describe without setting a code.
