Glow plug light not going out, hard to start

I am not a mechanic, but a tinkering backyard guy... bought an 84 f250 to plow with, glow light does not go out after pressing it... would it be the glow plugs or the wiring harness?

Thanks, MobyMech, I will try that

Hi

Check that the glow plugs are receiving a supply voltage. I don't know if the supply to the plugs on this vehicle is common rail or individual, but if they are receiving a voltage supply then I would say that at least two glow plugs are out.

No worries whatsoever, you're very welcome!

The best of luck with the repair.

It may be worthwhile not rating the answers until after you have tried the suggestions, because if the suggestion is correct then it would warrant a FIXYA rather than a HELPFUL, and the mechanic who made the suggestion would get a better rating.

    Very best regards

Why is my ford diesel hard to start

Hard starts, can be a number of different things... But most common is some or most of your glow plugs are bad, or your glow plug relay.
if you have not changed to glow plugs, in a few years, you should just replace them. They're not that expensive.
when glow plugs, and the relay are working properly, vehicle starts right up.

98 ford f250 hard to shift and wont start unless block heater is plugged in for 2 hrs

i,m assuming you have a 7.3L diesel if so you have one or more bad glow plugs or a bad glow plug module causing the start issue as for the hard to shift issue is it straight gear , automatic or what without more info that is a loaded question back to the start issue your glow plugs have a harness that is actually part of the valve cover gasket about middle of top of valve cover you will see a connector unhook this connector and inspect both sides they like to burn and melt due to poor connections and will also cause this problem

My 84 ford f250 6.9 diesel. Starts and then dies and wont start.

could have a bad fuel transfer pump ( block mounted) or air getting into fuel system. This could be caused by a pin hole in the fuel lines ( supply or return) have someone crank it over for you while you press the shrader valeve on the fuel filter housing , see if you are getting fuel or air. Could also be an injection pump problem. Best thing would be to have it checked by a qualified diesel mechanic, as this could be caused by many different things. Kinda costly to throw parts at it on a guess without proper testing

I have a 1988 f250 with 7.3lt engine it is hard to start when it is cold.it seams to me that the glow plugs are not staying on long enough.once the engine is hot have no trouble starting it.the owner i...

these 7.3 engines always need a reliable source of battery power to start in any wheather when engine is cool, inspect the batteries and make sure they both retain at least 11.3 volts under load, if they are old batteries try replacing them if that still doesnt work inspect the glow plug solenoid for corrosion on the terminals or try replacing the whole solenoide

97 7.3L powerstroke wont start?

Checking and cleaning the battery and conections at the battery and starrter not forgetting the all impotant grounds is a must at first. slow cranking do to bad battery's or conections is a common cause witch will allso decrease the effectiveness of the glow plugs. Allso the glow plugs of this truck do have a problem of going out so a new set wouldn't hurt the other thing to know about this truck is that the light indecater is just a recomendation the plugs themselves will stay on for around two minutes so a delaid start ten to twenty seconds prior couldn't hurt and will help the enitial cold start. Other known hard start problems for this rig consist of worn fuel pump, bad glow plug relay, or high oil presure sender. I allso would refrain from using either by pluging the truck in tell you can find the problem.

F250 Ford 7.3 L Powerstroke Hard to Start Cold

I have a 2000 F250 with Powerstroke and my buddy has a 02 with same engine. Both of us have had the same problem. There are two coils (look like starter coils) on top of the engine that can be seen from the passenger side of the truck. The shorter of the two, has to do with supplying voltage to the glow plugs. When this coil gets older, it breaks down causing a higher resistance in the circuit. Which reduces the volts that the glow plugs see. In turn resembles a problem with the plugs. My buddy and I changed the coils and both trucks start like new. The part cost $80-$90. and can be changed in less than 5 minutes. Glow plugs are a lot bigger job and more expensive.
