I have a 96 Honda Civic HX. When I am at idle the car starts to shake and the rpms fall almost to zero. I took the car to a mechanic and was told that I need a new Catalytic Converter and the EGR ports cleaned. Is this the reason why I have idle trouble or is it something unrelated?

Yes and No. The EGR can cause the car to idle rough and or stall. I am assumeing the check engine light was on and set code for EGR and Catalytic Converter. If the engine isn't running right it is possible the cat won't work right due to improper air fuel ratio that the EGR is causing. To do repair proper the EGR should be fixed then clear codes and see if the code for Catalytic Converter. There are other reasons that would your car to idle rough or stall I am just assuming that this mechanic got codes or tested the EGR right.

Idle going up and down

One time my idle was doing the exact same thing on my Honda Civic. It actually ended up being a crack in my compressor. It took a while for me to figure it out, but once the a/c ran out, I took it to the mechanic and he told me I would have to replace my compressor.

My honda civic 98 hx m4va transmition type, the trans drives fine exept when gearing up I can't feel when shifting and rpms goes up and down,I replace the transmition and still doing the same, also when...

I have a 1998 Civic HX 2DR as well and mine also takes a moment to engage when you press the gas. I don't know if this is normal or not? I just bought the car and I need to replace the trans fluid only because I don’t know if there is Honda oil or another brand in it. The CVT transmissions only can use Honda's CVT oil. There is a recommend alternative oil but based on the manual it’s only for temporary use until you can replace it with the Honda oil otherwise it will cause damage to the transmission over time.

Rpms up and down/idlind

hey

il give you a list of problems it could be...its a problem that could come from a wide range of sensors etc

try changing your TPS (throttle positioning sensor) its located on the intake area (look where the throttle cable hooks to the engine) Possibility of a fuel pressure regulator problem. Also a faulty Idle Air Control motor (IAC) could cause the problem. computer may need to be reset. (disconnect the battery for bout 15 mins) possibly a vacuum leak...check hoses, you may need to replace your intake maniflod gasket
