Was it properly mantained? Was the pump running quiet? Are there leaks at the steering rack? They'll usually leak before they fail. The pump's cheaper and easier to replace-start there.

Thanks for trying to help, hydraulic power steering is easy. The Ford escape has electric power steering, no pump, pulleys or fluid.

A few things to check first.
Open your hood and locate the belt that should be connected to pulleys. If missing or damaged you will need to replace the belt. Most important this belt also drives many other components of the car.

The next thing to check is the power steering reservoir. Located as shown in the picture. If there is now fluid in this reservoir than you will need to fill it with power steering fluid. (you can buy this at walmart or any auto parts store)

There is a possibility that if all these things check out ok that the power steering pump has gone bad. Also if you replace the power steering fluid and it leaks runs out again you have a leak somewhere and would need to have a mechanic shop to help locate it.

Well, thanks for trying but the Escape has Electric assisted power steering. No power steering pump, fluid or pulleys.

that is the brake master cylinder for BRAKE FLUID!!! the power steering fluid resevoir is on the inside right fender (not even in your pic)

  • Josh Hanke Sep 17, 2011

Do NOT put power steering fluid in the brake master cylinder ! Unless you feel like replacing everything in the braking system

There is no power steering fluid or pump to replace. It is an electric power steering system.
