Hi. Here's the proceudere on how to replace the water pump of your 97 Chevy Cavalier.

•1
Drain the cooling system. Place a large oil drain container under the drain fitting located on the bottom of the radiator. Turn the drain fitting counterclockwise until fluid is draining from the radiator. Use a pair of pliers to turn the drain fitting if you cannot turn it by hand. Turn the fitting clockwise to tighten it after all of the fluid has drained from the radiator.
•2
Remove the cooling fan. Disconnect the electrical connection from the fan motor. Remove the bolts holding the fan assembly to the radiator support with a ratchet wrench. Pull the fan assembly up from the engine compartment and remove it.
•3
Remove the serpentine belt. Place a wrench over the belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner to release the tension on the belt. Pull the belt off the pulleys and remove it from the vehicle.
•4
Remove the water pump pulley. Place a screwdriver behind the pulley to lock it in place while removing the pulley mounting bolts with a ratchet wrench.
•5
Disconnect the coolant hoses running to the water pump.
•6
Remove the water pump mounting bolts with a ratchet wrench or wrench and remove the water pump from the vehicle.
•7
Clean the mating surfaces of the engine block and new water pump with a towel saturated with lacquer thinner.
•8
Apply a thin layer of RTV sealer to both sides of the new water pump gasket and place the gasket on the new water pump.
•9
Place the water pump against the engine block and finger tighten the water pump mounting bolts to hold the pump in place. Tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to 18 foot-pounds.
•10
Place the pulley on the water pump and install the water pump pulley mounting bolts with a ratchet wrench.
•11
Attach any hoses previously disconnected from the water pump.
•12
Install the serpentine belt. Route the belt over the pulleys according to the routing diagram in the engine compartment. Place a wrench over the belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner to tighten the tension on the belt.
•13
Install the cooling fan. Gently lower the cooling fan in position and install the mounting bolts attaching the fan assembly to the radiator support with a ratchet wrench. Attach the electrical connection to the fan motor.
•14
Refill the cooling system to the appropriate level, start the vehicle and check for leaks around the water pump.

All the best!

SOURCE: water pump needs replacement

Depends on which engine if it's the 2,2 engine fairly easy but the 2.4 is a big job Timing Cover & Exhaust Manifold Removal Required. With the 2.2 locate water pump loosen the bolts on the pulley then remove the serpentine belt. Finish removing the pulley bolts now you can get at the water pump bolts. Use a container under the car to catch the antifreeze. Remove the water pump from the engine, installing new pump in reverse order to removal.

SOURCE: how to replace water pump on 2.4 chevy cavalier

This is a job for the dealer or cerified mechanic. The front cover and timing chain needs to be remove to access the water pump mounted behind the engine. The pump is driven by the timing chain and timing will need to be reset using special tools.

SOURCE: 2.2 liter engine, getting hot. change tstat, same.

I would start your car when it is cold and feel the upper radiator hose. When the car starts to warm up the thermostat you have installed will open up and you will feel the water flow past where you are squeezing the hose and the hose will become very hot. This will tell you if you thermostat is opening and installed correctly and if you water pump is working.

If your radiator cap is not working properly the system isn't sealed and this can cause the coolant to boil over and your car to overheat. Might want to repalce that they are cheap.

I would also pull the radiator cap while the car is running and look at the coolant, does it appear to be flowing smoothly thru the radiator. Have a helper rev up the motor while you look at the coolant in the radiator. When they rev it up do you see a lot of cavitation in the radiator (bubbles). If so this is an indication of a leaking head gasket. Observe the tail pipe for white smoke to aid in this diagnosis. Just because neither of this two conditions are present doesnt mean you don't have a leaking head gasket, I would also get a head gasket combustion kit from NAPA it will tell you if there is comnbustion in the coolant.

Finanally are all of your cooling fans working properly?

Would a 97 cavalier fuel pump fit in a 2002 cavalier?

No. If you look up the part numbers on those 2 vehicles, you will find that the fuel pump part numbers are completely different. The 2002 Cavalier is most likely equipped with an EcoTec engine which did not exist in 1997. - Totally different specifications.

When i put the pump on and everything back together filled with 50-50 it started leaking out the bopttom of the pump

You replaced the water pump i presume? Are all the bolt tighten to the correct torque?I just done a water pump replacement on a 97 Cavalier and i had one bolt loose and thought that i had misdiagnosed my coolant leak problem when in fact,i had just not installed the pump tight enough. Also, you may want to use silicon sealant instead of the supplied paper gasket,i've had better luck with sealant rather than the paper gasket.

97 CAVALIER (Z24) FAILED SMOG TEST

No the water pump will not affect the smog test. You probably failed the idle?
Usually with this age of vehicle you can replace the o2 (oxygen) sensor and it will pass. Cleaning the MAF if it has one cant hurt either if you do it right.
