Your water pump is driven by the timing belt; to access you will need to remove the forward portion of the engine (pumps/alternator/belts and such) when replacing the water pump you wll need to remove and then replace the timing belt and tensioner. Much care is needed to to insure the proper timing or things can go very bad. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the easiest) I'd give this a 6.5 to 7.

I hope this may have assisted you,
Tom

Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. Remove the bolts holding the water inlet to reveal the thermostat.

My montero keeps overheating. I put a new

These newer engines and air lock when changing the thermostat. Somewhere in the thermostat housing you should see some kind of a plug. You need to do this while engine is cool. Take the cap off the radiator. Remove the plug. You should get air out of the system. Keep letting air out as you put more coolant if needed. When all the air is gone put the plug back in and top off the radiator and you should be good to go.

From the upper hose of radiator, trace back to the engine. The thermostat is inside of the housing connected to the upper hose.
