Replacing a brake light bulb for a 2006 chevrolet equionx

Light bulbs require power and ground in order to work. The ground circuit for the left rear combination lamp is shared between the turn lamp, stop lamp and tail lamp. Because the tail light still works in that specific combination lamp, we know that the shared/common ground for that assembly is OK. The power circuit for both stop lamps (left and right) have the same origin; voltage flows from the STOP LP FUSE (15A) through the DBC RELAY (when the stop lamp switch is pressed) and then to each stop lamp via their respective circuit branches. Because the right stop lamp works, we know that the shared/common fuse, relay and switch are all OK. I'd suspect an open in the left stop lamp power supply branch and would recommending checking for voltage on the green & black wire at the left rear combination lamp assembly to confirm. Regarding the left lamp on the hatch, the wiring diagram indicates these are not stop lamps rather tail lamps only. I'd recommend installing a tail lamp bulb instead of a brake light bulb into that assembly as a first step. The only thing I can think of is corrosion inside the lamp socket due to repeated condensation. Can you unscrew your tail light assembly as if you are going to replace the bulbs? Usually a push in, quarter turn to pull the bulb out, then inspect the inside socket. Use sand paper then paper towel to remove it. Some folks use lemon juice on the paper towel. Re-insert and have some press brake pedal. A whole new assembly is only $30 or so.

Change the Rear Brake Lights

• Open the trunk and twist the retaining wing nuts off the studs holding the carpeted trim cover in place on the back side of the tail lamps.

• Pull the carpeted trim cover out of the way and pry the plastic caps out of the holes with the screwdriver tip.

• Unbolt the nuts holding the tail-lamp assembly in place using the socket set.

• Pull the tail lamp assembly away from the body of the Stratus. Grab the socket for the bulb in question and twist it counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the old bulb out by hand and insert the replacement bulb. Reinstall the socket in reverse of removal.

• Push the tail lamp assembly back into position and tighten the nuts back down onto the retaining studs using the socket set. Pop the plastic caps back into the holes, pull the carpeted trim cover back into position and reinstall the plastic wing nuts. Close the trunk.

Sedan

The tail lamp, brake lamp, turn

signal lamp and backup lamp bulbs

are located in the same portion of

the tail lamp assembly. Follow the

same steps to replace either bulb.

1. Make sure headlamp switch is in

OFF position and open trunk and

remove two plastic mushroom nuts,

three push pins and the plastic

cover from inside the trunk to

access the lamp assembly.

2. Carefully pull the carpet away to

expose the lamp assembly hardware.

3. Remove four nut and washer

assemblies and the lamp assembly

from the vehicle.

4. Remove the bulb socket by

rotating it counterclockwise, then

pulling it out of the lamp assembly.

5. Pull the bulb from the socket and
push in the new bulb.

6. Install the bulb socket into the lamp assembly by rotating it clockwise.

7. Install the lamp assembly on the vehicle with four nut and washer

assemblies ensuring the washers on the nuts are flush with the body to

prevent water from entering the trunk.

8. Carefully push the carpet back in to place and install the plastic cover
inside the trunk with three push pins and two plastic mushroom nuts.

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (coupe)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the hatchback.

2. From inside the luggage

compartment remove the wing nut

of the rear light assembly cover.

3. Using a Phillips screw driver

remove the screw. The lamp is still

retained by a spring loaded clip.

Remove by gently pulling out the

light housing.

4. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise as far as possible and pull it

out.

5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.

Install in reverse order.

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (sedan)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the trunk.

2. From inside the luggage

compartment remove the three wing

nuts of the light housing.

3. Gently pull the light housing to

the outside.

4. Turn the bulb socket

counterclockwise and pull it out.

5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
Install in reverse order.

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (wagon)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the hatchback.

2. Using a screw driver remove the

fixings and trim from the body.

3. Remove the socket from the lamp

assembly

4. Pull the bulb straight out of the

socket.
Install in reverse order.

Tail Lights

1. Open the endgate or liftgate.
   

2. Remove the screws that retain the tail lamp assembly to the vehicle.
   

   Tail lamp assembly removal
   

3. Rotate the bulb sockets 1/4turn counter-clockwise in order to remove the bulb sockets from the tail lamp assembly.
   

4. Remove the bulbs from the sockets.
   

To install:

1. Install the bulbs into the sockets.
   

2. Install the bulb sockets to the tail lamp assembly by rotating the sockets1/4 turn clockwise.
   

3. Install the tail lamp assembly to the vehicle.
   

4. Install the screws that retain the tail lamp assembly to the vehicle. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
   

Tail/Turn Signal Lamp Removal & Installation Cab/Chassis

To Remove:

1. Disconnect lamp assembly electrical connector.
2. Remove nuts and lamp assembly from bracket.
3. Remove lens screws.
4. Remove lens, gasket and bulb.

To Install:

1. Install lamp assembly and nuts to bracket.
2. Connect electrical connector.
3. Install bulb, gasket and lens.
4. Install lens screws.

Except Cab/Chassis

To Remove:

1. Lower endgate.
2. Remove 2 tail/turn signal lamp assembly retaining screws.
3. Rotate tail/turn signal lamp assembly and remove from vehicle.
4. Disconnect lamp assembly electrical connector.
5. Remove bulbs by pulling straight out of bases.

To Install:

1. Install bulbs by pushing straight into bases.
2. Connect electrical connector.
3. Install tail/turn signal lamp assembly to vehicle and secure with 2 screws.

Removal & Installation Cab/Chassis

To Remove:

1. Disconnect lamp assembly electrical connector.
2. Remove nuts and lamp assembly from bracket.
3. Remove lens screws.
4. Remove lens, gasket and bulb.

To Install:

1. Install lamp assembly and nuts to bracket.
2. Connect electrical connector.
3. Install bulb, gasket and lens.
4. Install lens screws.

Except Cab/Chassis

To Remove:

1. Lower endgate.

3. Rotate tail/turn signal lamp assembly and remove from vehicle.

you need to remove the 2 torx screws (accessable when you open the tail gate). once they are out, you are able to pull the whole tail lamp assembly out of its position, and then turn the socket counter clockwise to remove it from the assembly. replace the bulb, and reassemble. good luck!

There is a recall on the tail lights from GM. The problem I found on mine were faulty contacts that would burn out the bulb contacts in short order after replacing the bulbs. So even if you replace the bulbs they will only work for a short while before they burn out. Take it to a GM dealer to get the complete tail light assemblies replaced.
