Air conditioning??? I just bought a 1997 Jeep Wrangler SE, and the dealer told me that all older Jeeps didn't come with AC and I would have to buy it separate, I was convinced and bought the Jeep! Was I tricked:(

ok, i see you are reading books or web sites that have generic tuneup information, not relate to real jeeps, yes?

Guess what?, there IS NONE.
it only has and ORIFICE.
and sure it can clog, and does, in fact i drove for 500,000 miles
in 3 jeeps. and cleaned it vast times.
on one car , the grommet got old and it the orifice collapsed.
and i had to buy a new one from jeep.

when it clogges, the engine leaks oil
and the oil pukes (backups) and dumps oil on the air cleaner.
there is no PCV valve, on this engine. but that dont mean its service free.

why are you using 4wd,

post road, tires are touching, first. ICE, pavement or offroad.

that is first, nobody can diagnose car , now knowing that.. ever.

i have 2 real jeeps., my 5th, and 4 japanese jeeps. so.....

the jeep uses PART TIME, 4wd, it is NOT AWD.

could be anything from a steeper motor to mass air flow sensor ,problem is i can tell you what the causes are but the cost involved in fitting new parts and it still doesnt work could be more than taking it to a dealer in the first place ,But before you do anything else check all the vacumn hoses from the inlet manifold manifold as a air leak here caused by a perished pipe could just be the problem .

Maybe your dashboard vents are clogged, obstructed or stuck in close position somehow.

If not, check the air hoses that carry the cooled air to the main vents are not clogged, bent, ripped or simply detached.
If its practical for you, check if they are correctly placed, clean and general conditions are ok if you can.

If above are not the issue, go to check outlets of the A/C unit, its filters for the possible reason.

No cabin filter in a 97 Jeep Wrangler.

Most likely yes. One thing about the older Jeeps is that they did not change the models much from year to year. If the two jeeps had the same engine, they are probably nearly 100% interchangeable.

This may be the AC compressor cycling switch is defective. It is located in the larger of the 2 AC lines coming from the compressor, it has a wire connector to it with 2-3 wires. To verify this is the issue jumper the connector with a small piece of wire and see if the compressor runs.

I'm guessing that the top and Jeep are 2 different years.
You need to go to a salvage or junk yard to find the same plug and cut the other one off and splice in the one you buy from the junk yard.
